Faithful Fathers of the Founding: Lessons for Father’s Day

This Father’s Day, we pause to celebrate the profound role of fathers—not only in our homes but in the very foundation of our nation. As Psalm 127:3-5 reminds us, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord…Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.”

Many of America’s Founding Fathers embodied this Biblical vision of fatherhood. They were men of faith who prioritized the spiritual and moral training of their children. As we’ve highlighted in past resources like “Celebrating Fathers” and “Fathers & Education,” these men believed in training their children in virtue, industry, and a love for useful knowledge, while emphasizing the Bible as central to forming character.

Of the 56 courageous signers of the Declaration of Independence, the vast majority were fathers, some raising large families. For example, Carter Braxton of Virginia had 18 children, Roger Sherman had 15, Josiah Bartlett had 12, and Abraham Clark had 10. These men modeled dedication, providing not just materially but spiritually—teaching Scripture, virtue, and a sense of duty to God and country.

Their fatherhood was tested by the Revolution’s sacrifices. John Witherspoon, a clergyman and Declaration signer, lost a son at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. Abraham Clark of New Jersey endured the anguish of having two sons captured and imprisoned by the British, one of whom was kept on the notorious prison ship Jersey. Yet these fathers remained steadfast, understanding that the liberty they secured was for their children and generations to come. Their stories reveal the high cost of freedom—and the enduring legacy of faithful fatherhood.

This Father’s Day, let’s honor the dads in our lives and draw inspiration from these Founding Fathers. May we, like them, lead our families with Biblical wisdom, courage, and a commitment to passing on the heritage of faith and freedom.
