june recap 🍓

hi friends! it’s been a wicked busy month over in wababaland ☁️ a lot has changed in my world, the biggest thing being that i’m now working full-time on wababaland! the two most surprising things i’ve learned so far are: (1) how much my mindset has changed in truly working for myself, and (2) how little free time i’ve gained (😅). overall, it has been an incredibly joyful and fruitful change, albeit a little scary.

this month, i’ve been focused on leaning into dessert catering. my creativity thrives when i channel it towards crafting treats for specific occasions, and holy moly has it felt explosive to embrace that. here are the cakes i made this month:

top: coconut dome cake, strawberry lychee cloud cake, rose vanilla cake for woodstock pride, dark chocolate chamomile cake for juneteenth

bottom: slices & whole lychee tres leches cake for the norwich farmer’s market, hojicha cherry cream cake, chocolate olive oil cake, and one more lychee tres leches to close the month out

i’ve felt so grateful for the opportunities i’ve had this month to make treats for a couple special events. it’s also been so fulfilling to work more closely with alec to make and photograph some “just because” cakes to test design and flavor ideas and give my creative energy more space to dance.

also on the docket this month was the WABABALAND TRUCK 👀 this lady has been in the making since december, and we’re getting ready to bring her out for her debut this weekend!

a couple weeks ago, i saw another kei truck on the road and burst out laughing at how small and cute they look amongst other vehicles on the road. it’s a testament to how talented our friends tony and jian are: the build quality will be blatantly obvious when you see the truck in person, but they also designed the build to make every centimeter of space count.

this truck is not only a beautiful venue for serving drinks and desserts—it also includes four (4!!!) deployable tables, a service counter, and a huge storage drawer that’s custom-sized to fit the sidio crates i store everything in. even the wood panel that covers the drink taps was finished with a gloss so it can double as a signboard 😭

i won’t bore you further with descriptions of features that will be better showcased through photos; we’ll capture those soon to properly highlight everything this little truck has to offer. but i can’t wait to share the truck with you in person very soon! we’ll be debuting her in hartland at our town’s old home day celebrations this weekend, july 4 and 5. follow along on instagram if you’re interested in updates on where we take the truck through summer and fall.

last, but not least, i’ve had the privilege of spending so much more time with my parents. now that they’re both retired and spending winters back home in shanghai, time with them feels extra precious. and now that i have full autonomy over my schedule, spending time with them is a commitment i have penciled in every week.

it’s been a delight for us to witness each other more in our day-to-day lives: how we putter around the house and what we occupy our down time with. just yesterday, i learned that my mom is following the world cup and used to set an alarm to watch games with her sister and dad!? i didn’t even know she understood soccer! 😅 living closer to our parents was a major reason alec and i moved back home to vt and i am so grateful for the mundane, goofy moments.
