Mostly movies this week, but a couple of series worth mentioning too. The standout for me was How to Get to Heaven from Belfast.
How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (Netflix)
A comedy series that feels like a buddy movie with strong Twin Peaks energy. I’ve also seen it compared to a mix of Scooby-Doo and Murder, She Wrote, which honestly fits. It’s packed with good one-liners and has a fun, quirky tone.
That said, I think it might have worked even better if it were a bit shorter and less complicated. Still, it’s an entertaining and funny mystery overall, good craic!
Bigfoot Took Her (Hulu)
The investigators can be a bit irritating personality-wise, but I do think their conclusions hold up. It’s actually better than most of the paranormal mixed with crime shows. It follows investigator Jessica Chobot and law enforcement official Robert Collier as they revisit the strange disappearance of Theresa Bier. Despite its flaws, it’s a compelling watch if you’re into unsolved mysteries. It’s also a reminder that society and investigating crimes has changed a lot since the 80s.
A Secret Love (Netflix)
Absolutely lovely. This documentary tells the story of a couple who shared a decades-long relationship in secret, so much so that even their families didn’t know. One of them played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League when they met.
The film moves between past and present, showing both the joy of their life together and the challenges they face later on. I went through several tissues watching it. Truly beautiful.
Nuremberg (Netflix)
An interesting watch, though not quite as impactful as I’d hoped. I was initially disappointed not to see Ben Ferencz, but later realized the trials he prosecuted came afterward. Still, it works as a study of personalities, and Russell Crowe gives a strong performance.
Con Mum (Netflix)
A wild ride! This documentary follows a chef whose life is turned upside down when a globetrotting socialite claims to be his mother. The story that unfolds is chaotic and fascinating. It’s crazy.
The Shooting on Hawthorn Hill (Netflix)
I had a pretty good sense of where this was heading within the first ten minutes, but it was still interesting to watch it play out. Once again, a reminder that real life can be stranger, and wilder, than fiction.
