Yesterday I wrote that I’d stop blogging in Vietnamese or about Vietnam. I didn’t expect to receive so many comments.
Honestly, I feel a little embarrassed that something so small and personal would attract this much attention. I’m also happy that the random things I write somehow resonate with so many people. Thank you sincerely.
I didn’t think anyone would care why I wanted to stop, but since many people asked, I want to share a bit more.
Over the past few years, I spent a huge amount of time focused on Vietnam. My team and I did accomplish a few things. I still have many ideas and plans, but sometimes it feels like banging my head against a wall. Then again, that’s nothing new. Anything worthwhile demands tears and sometimes blood.
But over the last two months, I was reminded that what I do best is competing with the world. A huge opportunity is opening up in front of us, and this time I don’t have to bang my head against a wall to pursue it.
Somehow competing with the world feels easier than competing inside Vietnam. We just need to be better.
If I want to seize this opportunity, I need to focus. Whatever I can achieve in Vietnam won’t help me compete with the world. I can’t compete against the world’s best from Silicon Valley while spending months in Vietnam.
This blog has always been my connection to Vietnam, and it holds a special place in my life. I can’t bring myself to shut it down completely, so I’ll still share English posts I write on LinkedIn or Twitter. But I won’t be writing about Vietnam anymore.
I’ll always be Vietnamese. And someday, I’ll come back.
