Vimal Vijayakumar · The Real Me

Napoleon Hill once said, “It takes half your life before you discover life is a do-it-yourself project”. Well, it took me nearly 40 years to truly grasp that concept. The first 20 years were a bit of a blur and the next two decades? Well, let's just say I was the unsung hero behind everyone else's scenes.

My body felt like a battlefield, and my mind was a constant battleground. I found myself fighting wars I never signed up for. That smile on my face? More like a mask, hiding the shipwreck I felt inside—a sea of unmet needs.

Ever felt like you're watching your life unfold on a screen, without holding the remote? Screens, my friends, allow you to hit pause, adjust the brightness, or even switch channels entirely. And guess what? That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm hitting pause on the autopilot life, cranking up the discovery meter, and changing to a new channel—self-discovery and mindful living, in the hope of reaching a happier and more authentic version of myself: The Real Me.

Wondering, why the sudden shift? The past few years have been a wild ride, a rough patch that left me feeling stuck and lost. Midlife crisis, identity crisis—call it what you want. It's time for a change. My physical and mental health hit an all-time low, and I can't keep going like this. So, here's the deal: no going back to change the past, but starting today to create a new ending.

Renowned author Lewis B. Smedes once said, "To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you." As I embark on this self-discovery journey, I'm forgiving myself for neglecting my mind and body, for all the wrong turns, and anything else along the way. I'm also extending that forgiveness to those who've wronged me. A sincere sorry to anyone I've hurt, intentional or not, and a big thanks to those who've supported me.

"Why document this journey?" you might wonder. Well, sometimes sharing your story is the best way to find yourself. Maybe someone out there feels as lost as I do. This year is all about reclaiming my life, becoming the best version of myself, and who knows, inspiring a few folks along the way.

This is a tale of breaking, making, and a promise to rediscover the heartbeat buried beneath the noise. Lucky for me, I've got a cheering squad—my amazing wife and daughter. Without their love and support, this journey might have remained just a fleeting thought.
