seasons are for the privileged

a perspective of gratitude

growing up in Bangalore, India, I've had the privilege of enjoying how much this city has to give. the summers used to be mild and the weather was always perfect. it was something everyone romanticed and yearned for. but I had it and found it normal. I grew up in a place where I thought a weather like this was normal to everyone. I didn't see how much I had until I lost it

then the years went by and we thought summer of 2024 was bad. then came the summer of 2025 which was worse and now 2026. I can't imagine what 2027 summer would be. the heat now crosses 32°C which was so unknown to people who lived here. and the rains have gotten worse too. trees falling, roads flooding, nobody accounted for this drastic change. but growing up with such a pleasant weather doesn't show you the rougher parts of privilege.

we romanticize the morning sun through the sheer curtains in our living room. we express the painful AC cab to get to your AC corporate job only to complain about the heat OUTSIDE.

we can rush back to our houses to dry up and have a hot cup of tea while watching the rain. posting on Instagram about the harsh weather and how dangerous it is OUTSIDE

it's all a privilege

we GET to complain about it, we get to protect ourselves and enjoy certain parts of the weather. but not everyone. the same rain that gives your stories an aesthetic vibe and a therapeutic sound to accompany your evening tea, is the same rain that makes a security guard sleep in wet clothes, flood the tents of the homeless and make it hell for those who grow produce.

this doesn't mean we can't enjoy what we work hard for. but it definitely can be something we're grateful towards. and maybe even make it a little enjoyable for those who don't . seasons are enjoyed by the privileged.
