Something Magical is happening next week

Hope you’re having a good summer.

Just flying into your inbox very quickly to let you know that something magical is happening in the skies next week!

Next Wednesday (12th August) there will be a solar eclipse (to varying degrees, depending on where you live) followed just a few hours later by the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which in turn coincides with a new moon. Phew.

This means, to quote The Sky at Night magazine, just a few hours after the solar eclipse, “the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak in moonless skies.” Absolutely perfect viewing conditions!

What a combination of events!!

The solar eclipse is obviously the big one, as we haven’t had one of those in the UK for over a decade, but the fact that it coincides with a new moon and a meteor shower just a few hours later feels pretty special.

Write the date on your calendar, in ink, and circle it! Here’s some more info about the eclipse and here’s some more info about the Perseid meteor shower.

Here’s hoping for good, cloudless viewing conditions for both.
