🚫Why I don't rotate toys🚫

Toy rotation is the closest thing this niche has to a commandment. Split your collection into boxes, swap them every fortnight, and the toys will feel new again. It’s in every playroom guide, every “how to get your child to play independently” reel, and it comes with a promise that’s genuinely hard to argue with: rotate, and engagement goes up.

Here’s my problem with it. The promise is true, and it’s still the wrong thing to chase.

I don’t rotate, and after watching what actually happens in our playroom I’d argue rotation is one of the few pieces of standard advice that works against the thing we say we want. It’s not a small preference either. It changes what you buy, how your child plays, and how deep that play can go. So this letter is the full argument, the honest counter-arguments, and the system I use in its place.

Start with why it works, because it does work, in a narrow way.

Put a toy away for three weeks and bring it back, and you’ll get a spike. Your child will make straight for it and play with real intensity for a while. That’s a real effect and you’re not imagining it. It’s novelty, the same mechanism that makes a new toy briefly the best toy in the house, and rotation is a way of manufacturing it on demand from stock you already own.
