Bird Language Club Postponed to June 14th

Hi Friends,

Hope you have been enjoying the spring migration season. As I left my apartment today for a walk, I saw a raven eating bugs in the middle of the street, and as cars came by he just cawed menacingly and refused to move. Heard the usual gang of towhees, song sparrows, wrens, robins, juncos, chickadees, and bushtits as I wandered around—plus my first yellow warbler of the year. What a great time of the year to be out and about listening to birds. I’ve been reading the wonderful book Crow Planet by Lyanda Lynn Haupt lately, and it’s helped me pay more attention to the intricacies of crow speak. On that, however, I’m still an absolute beginner.

Unfortunately, I have to cancel the May 24th meet-up at Swan Lake. Some things have come up and I’m not able to host that day. However, I’ve rescheduled the meeting to Sunday, June 14th, same place, same time: 9am–11:30am, meeting in the main Swan Lake parking lot. I’m hoping we can also have meetings this year in July and August, as well as in the fall, if folks are available and interested.

Again, if you’ve been to the club before, the format will be familiar—a brief introduction to bird language with an emphasis on storytelling and then some time to sit by ourselves and listen/notice. We’ll follow this with a casual, fun mapping exercise to record together what we saw and heard. After that we can hang around for some Q&A with the field guides or walk around the lake a little bit. As I said in the last message, I’ll try to start the solo sits just after 10am—so if you want to skip the introduction and join us later, that’s totally fine. We’ll probably either be under the teaching shelter or in the amphitheatre, depending on whether someone else is using the space.
