In Vibe Sesh #16, Bruno and Cisco sit down with special guest Dr. Richard L. Blake, a British psychology PhD, breathwork researcher, author, and mental-health provocateur known online as The Breath Geek. Richard conducted the first randomized controlled trial of online Conscious Connected Breathwork for anxiety and now researches family estrangement, therapy culture, and the stories we build around mental health.
Richard isn’t criticizing therapy from a safe distance: after struggling with depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia, an eating disorder, and suicide attempts, the right therapist helped save his life. But his academic work led him to question whether parts of modern healing culture are helping people move forward—or teaching them to organize their identities around their wounds.
What followed was a raw, funny, occasionally chaotic conversation about one enormous tension:
How do we help people feel seen without confirming stories that may prevent them from seeing clearly?
We explored:
Why validation can be healing—and when it can reinforce fear, avoidance, or victimhood
The difference between validating someone’s pain and validating their interpretation
Freud, Adler, Jung, and whether understanding the past actually changes the future
Richard’s personal mental-health journey and the therapist who finally reached him
The science, promise, and potential dangers of breathwork
Awe, psychedelics, spirituality, and the modern crisis of meaning
Whether “healing” has become an identity and a secular hero’s journey
Family estrangement, boundaries, reconciliation, and the impossible question: Where is the line?
How social media rewards simple psychological labels for complicated human relationships
AI as an honest mirror—or a defense attorney that makes your side of the story sound unquestionably right
Resilience, voluntary discomfort, misogi, and learning that discomfort is not always danger
A spontaneous real-life story from Josh that forced the entire estrangement debate out of theory and into messy human reality
The Eternal Loop: the one moment Richard would choose to relive forever
This wasn’t a debate about whether therapy is good or bad. It was a deeper examination of what healing is supposed to accomplish—and whether feeling understood is enough if our lives never actually change.
