Hello!

I’m back in New York this weekend after what feels like a million years away (most of July, and honestly it’s been lovely) but more importantly, I’m moderating a book launch event Monday in Brooklyn and you should come if you’re local. It’s for my husband, author and journalist Casey Michel, whose new, unfortunately highly relevant book, United States of Oligarchy, comes out on Tuesday, August 4.

I obviously have my biases, but putting my journalist, editor, human observer hat on, I honestly cannot recommend this book enough. It’s his third and in my opinion, his best one yet. Casey has a knack for understanding and explaining the most corrupt forces and actors that shape our society and governments, and best of all, is also able to pinpoint what policies and civic engagement we need to fight back against those forces and create a more equitable and fair world for us all. He also has a great sense of humor and a gift for storytelling.

Don’t just take my word for it: read his starred review in Publishers Weekly or the many positive reviews he’s already receiving on Goodreads:

“Expertly expressed, this book takes a deep dive into how America’s billionaires have used their wealth to manipulate elections, policies, and foreign relations in the US. This is a must read.” (thanks, Jackie)

“United States of Oligarchy is a book I think everyone should read. I’m a Conservative Republican and though the book leaned toward liberal views, I surprised myself by agreeing with them.” (thanks, Monica)

Can you imagine a book that might actually break through to your MAGA Republican relatives in this polarized day and age?! That alone is a strong selling point.

Read more from those reviews here, and definitely follow his Instagram, where he’s roping our relatives and friends into some very funny promotional videos for the book. (This one’s my favorite so far.) If you come Monday, maybe you can be in one, too.

For those of who you aren’t local, he’ll be doing book events in Washington, D.C., Portland, Seattle, and Dallas in the coming weeks as well. And pre-ordering or buying it at your local bookstore is always a great way to support independent authors’ work.

Hope to see you soon and would love to hear what you think about United States of Oligarchy! I also highly recommend the audiobook version, narrated by our friend Joe Dwyer, who has a truly great voice.
