The Architecture of Nothing: Discovering the Essence of Simplicity in Paper

In a world increasingly cluttered, the human eye craves a quiet pause. My new paper necklace is a meditation on this very idea. It's a return to the foundational principles of my work, but stripped down, refined, and reduced to its absolute, essential elements. Welcome to the exploration of "The Essence of Simplicity."

True simplicity is not the removal of everything, but the intentional use of just enough.

When you work with paper, this principle becomes tangible. You cannot hide imperfections with complex settings or elaborate casting; every cut, every fold, is exposed.

This forces a discipline that is both challenging and beautiful. Simplicity in paper isn't just an aesthetic choice; it’s an architectural requirement.

For this necklace, I wanted to strip back the forms and colors to their most basic units. I found myself thinking about elements and voids—the fundamental atoms of design.

Consider the necklace pictured above. This piece is a perfect microcosm of my philosophy of simple design. It’s composed of a singular repeat: the small, stacked paper disc.

By grouping thousands of these small blue and azzurro elements into segments and separating them with precise, tiny red paper spacers, I created a complex rhythmic construction.

The true unique design, however, isn't just the materials. It's the moment of distortion. The linear blue structure is twisted and molded into a series of open loops.

This single gesture, a simple twist, transforms the necklace from a simple sequence of “beads” (the groups of paper elements) into a sculptural object.

The 'void' is as important as the 'matter'; the spaces within the curls define the entire form. Complexity is created through the simplest manipulation of a repeating unit. The design is unique because it is irreducible.

In this exploration of blue gradients, the tiny red paper spacers play a vital role. While they are small, they are not invisible. They introduce a micro-rhythm, a contrast that emphasizes the continuity of the blue.

Simplicity is about clarity. It is about understanding the conversation between elements.

The blue discs, the red spacers, and the void of the curls are all speaking the same language of minimal form.

The sharp focus on the interwoven curls reveals the structure that gives the piece its sculptural unique design.

Notice the interplay of azzurro (lighter blue) and navy (darker blue). The gradient isn't random; it's a structural element that guides the eye through each curl. The bright red spacer, though microscopic, provides a critical anchor point.
