Hey, it’s Vince — welcome to Red Zone Selling, edition #91. Every week — one idea from the field. Something I coached, lived, or learned the hard way. No theory. Just what works.
Here’s a hypothetical.
You have a choice. One opportunity or ten. Which do you take?
Answer fast. Don’t overthink it.
Now let me give you the context.
The one opportunity is well qualified. Fits your ICP. Strong use case. There’s urgency. And if it closes - it makes your year.
The ten opportunities are a mixed bag. Some unqualified. Some early Yellow Zone. A couple in the Green Zone. None that can make your year on their own.
Now which do you choose?
If your answer just changed - pay attention to that. Because what shifted wasn’t the math. It was the meaning. And that gap between your first instinct and your second answer? That’s where most sellers live. And it’s costing them.
Let’s name the fear.
Most sellers choose ten. Not because it’s the smart play. Because it feels safer.
A thin pipeline is terrifying. One deal feels like one point of failure. Ten deals feels like ten chances to survive.
But here’s what that thinking actually produces: ten distractions dressed up as a pipeline.
You’re not safer with ten weak deals. You’re just busier. And busy is the enemy of great execution.
The fear of a thin pipeline drives sellers to fill their CRM with deals that don’t belong there. And once those deals are in, they’re hard to kill. Because killing them feels like losing. So instead you carry them. You nurture them. You waste Tuesday afternoons on calls that go nowhere while your one real deal sits waiting for the attention it deserves.
This isn’t about pipeline math. It’s about who you are as a seller.
How you answer that hypothetical reveals your belief system.
Do you believe that volume creates safety? Or do you believe that quality creates results?
Elite sellers don’t think about pipeline size. They think about pipeline truth. They ask: does this deal actually deserve to be here? And if the answer is no - they cut it. Fast. Without guilt.
That discipline and willingness to say no to the ten so you can say yes to the one is what separates closers from chasers.
As I wrote in Red Zone Selling: “Chasers fill pipelines. Closers protect them.”
What the ten-deal pipeline actually costs you.
Here’s the hidden tax nobody talks about.
Every deal in your pipeline has a cognitive cost. Every open opportunity requires mental bandwidth — status updates, next steps, stakeholder tracking, follow-up. Multiply that by ten mediocre deals and you know what you get?
Shallow execution across the board.
You’re never fully locked in on anything. You’re context-switching constantly. You’re doing the minimum on everything and the maximum on nothing.
Meanwhile the rep in the next seat, the one with five clean, qualified deals is going three layers deep on every one. They know the stakeholders. They’ve built the business case. They’ve got a Mutual Action Plan running. They’re multi-threaded. They’re not managing pipeline. They’re closing it.
Volume sellers stay busy. Focus sellers win.
Here’s how elite sellers work the one deal.
When you commit to quality over quantity, when you choose the one over the ten, your execution has to match the opportunity. Here’s what that looks like.
Qualify it ruthlessly first. Run it through the 4F Deal Filter — Fit, Friction, Funding, Forecast. If it doesn’t score at least three out of four, it doesn’t deserve what comes next. Qualification isn’t a Yellow Zone formality. It’s the foundation everything else is built on.
Map every stakeholder. Who are the players? What’s their authority level? What’s their influence? What’s their position on your solution? You need to know the economic buyer, the technical buyer, the champion, the executive sponsor, procurement, legal, and the hidden influencers who show up late and slow deals down. Map them all. Know where you stand with each one.
Never be single-threaded. One contact is not a relationship. It’s a risk. If your champion goes dark, gets promoted, or leaves the company — and you have no other relationships in that account — the deal is done. Multi-thread early and often. Not because something might go wrong. Because something always does.
Run a Mutual Action Plan. A MAP is how you turn a deal from a conversation into a commitment. Both sides agree on the steps, the timeline, and the owners. It creates accountability. It surfaces friction early. And it tells you quickly whether your prospect is actually bought in — or just stringing you along.
Build the business case. Your champion believes in you. That’s not enough. The economic buyer needs to justify this investment internally. Help them do it. Build the ROI story. Quantify the pain. Make it easy for them to say yes — and hard for anyone else to say no.
Always provide value — not todos. Every interaction should leave your buyer better informed, more confident, or closer to a decision. If your touchpoints are just check-ins and next step reminders, you’re adding friction — not momentum.
Build trust on every interaction. Trust is the currency of enterprise sales. Spend every touchpoint earning it. Buyers don’t buy from the best solution. They buy from the person they trust most to deliver.
This is what deep execution looks like. You can’t do this for ten deals. You can do it for the one deal that matters.
The dare.
Open your pipeline right now.
Run every deal through the 4F filter. Be honest. How many score a three or better? How many have a mapped stakeholder list, a live MAP, and a business case in development?
That number - that’s your real pipeline.
Everything else is hope with a close date attached to it.
The best sellers I’ve ever worked with didn’t have the biggest pipelines on the team. They had the most honest ones. They knew exactly where they stood on every deal. And they weren’t afraid to cut the ones that didn’t belong.
That’s not pessimism. That’s precision.
Choose the one. Execute like it’s the only deal you’ve got. Because the sellers who win, they treat every qualified deal that way.
If this was worth your time, the best thing you can do is share it.
