Earlier today, we learned that VISAA state champion Gunner Colbert intends to transfer to the New York Military Academy.

Colbert, wrestling for Paul VI, was seeded second at the 2026 VISAA State Championships and advanced to the 175 lb finals after pinning St. Christopher’s Eric Pendlebury. In the finals, Colbert pulled the slight upset, taking down top-seeded Ryan Barone of Fishburne Military School in sudden victory. He went on to win three matches at the National Prep Championships, but did not place.

Also, during his sophomore season, Colbert won titles at the Panther Invitational and the WCAC’s. He was third at the Battle at the Bridge.

As a freshman, Colbert took fourth at the VISAA State Tournament, while competing at the 165 lb weight class. In the regular season, Colbert won the Richmond Invitational and was fourth at the NOVA Classic and fifth at the Raymond B. Oliver in Maryland.

In VaWrestle’s Class of 2028 rankings, Colbert came in at #12 overall in the Class of 2028 - up from #13 during the previous update.

Being a kid who started high school as an upperweight, Colbert is headed into his junior year and probably in for a big season.

Looking at the history and connections associated with the Colbert family, this move isn’t as surprising as it might seem. New York Military Academy’s wrestling program is now overseen by Scott Green. Green took Wyoming Seminary to a #1 national ranking before joining the Army West Point coaching staff. Gunner’s oldest brother, Brady, wrestled for Green at Wyoming Seminary and at West Point. Another brother, 2026 graduate Cash, is headed to West Point (or is already there).

Green left the Army staff earlier this offseason to take the job at NYMA. He has a reputation for being one of the best recruiters in the nation and will help lead NYMA to being one of the top programs in the country…sooner rather than later.

Green and I also do a podcast together for InterMat , so check that out; he’s not your typical wrestling coach.

Colbert is not the first Virginia native associated with the NYMA program. 2026 6A state champion Benjamin Aguilar is set to take a postgraduate year at NYMA.
