Vashon Nature Center · Vashon Nature Center

Mary Singer grew up here learning to swim at the public pool near the high school. Since, she has completed the Triple Crown of open water swimming! This includes crossing Catalina Channel, the English Channel, and circumnavigating Manhattan Island in the 20 Bridges swim, which are just three among many other notable swims. There are many challenging swims across the globe, yet Mary is choosing a striking one right here: circumnavigating Vashon. She views this as her most challenging swim yet; the water is colder and the distance further. And, she would be the first. Her swim will be done under channel rules- without assistance from wetsuit or buoy and without touching support boats.

Mary is partnering with Vashon Nature Center on this swim to give thanks to the natural environment that she enjoys regularly - and tries not to take for granted - and to highlight the work that VNC does for our marine environment. While Mary will do the swimming, this and any other marathon swim requires massive support, from boat captains to kayakers, to observers (ensuring adherence to the rules), and the crew who keeps her fed. Not to mention anyone who wants to cheer her on!

We have created a fun and informational way to follow along on Mary’s epic swim! Check out this interactive map that shows all of the Nature Center’s project areas that Mary will pass through during her endeavor. At each location, our map will tell you what VNC is doing there and a guess from our experts about what will be happening there when Mary swims by. This site also keeps a running list of all the people who have donated! This map will be live and will be tracking Mary during the swim so we can all follow and watch her progress!

Hear more from Mary about this epic challenge by checking out the article in the Beachcomber published this week where she answers questions and gives more insights on what the swim will be like for her. Read it here!

In addition, Mary is proudly celebrating the community for which she is so grateful: her local open water swim community (both on Vashon and over town), other islanders, her husband, and her family.

Mary’s swim will be during the tidal window of August 11 – 15, depending on the weather. We will send out an additional email-newsletter when she begins her swim, so make sure you are subscribed here to stay updated. Go Mary and thank you for your generous support!
