On Peter Mansbridge’s Good Talk podcast last week, Chantal Hebert describes three major challenges facing the federal government as we head into the fall:
Trade negotiations with Trump. The original goal was a new agreement with no tariffs on Canadian exports, but this now seems unlikely, given that the EU, Japan, and Korea have agreed to 15% tariffs. For now, Canadian exports that are CUSMA-compliant are still tariff-free, but Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada's response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. A summary from CBC. The other key part of Canada’s response has been to expand trade elsewhere.
The 2025 budget. This is not going to be a good-news budget. The government will be looking for support from at least one of the opposition parties.
Major projects. Two key projects will be the Contrecoeur port expansion in Montreal, which should help with increased exports to Europe, and the new Churchill Falls agreement between Newfoundland and Hydro-Quebec.

Housing Happy Hour. We hold a regular monthly event on the third Tuesday of the month. It’s an informal get-together for anyone who’s interested in why housing is so scarce and expensive, and what we should do about it. If you’re interested in attending, even if you’re not sure you’ll make it, please register, so that we can let the pub know how many people are coming.
