Have you ever been to a Christmas market? In the spirit of featuring countries in Behind and Ahead, I thought it would be fun this month to spotlight some of Europe’s famous Christmas markets.
Did you know …?
Nuremberg, Germany is home to the famous Christkindlesmarkt, especially for its traditional gingerbread and its opening ceremony.
As you might expect, Austria has several markets. One of the most popular is in Vienna. It’s called Vienna Christmas World on Rathausplatx. It even has an ice rink!
The oldest market in France, dating back to 1570, Strasbourg’s market is referred to as the “Capital of Christmas.”
Not to be outdone, Cologne, Germany, has 12 markets. The largest one is set against the backdrop of the Cologne Cathedral.
Having recently finished Dan Brown’s latest thriller, The Secret of Secrets, which is set in Prague, I’m not surprised the Old Town Square Christmas Market is celebrated for its festivities, fairy-tale-like atmosphere, and exquisite Czech food!

Movies Galore
Just as there are dozens of Christmas markets, so are there dozens of Christmas movies. Some are classics and others are more contemporary, which over time may become classics! Here’s your chance to vote for your favorite of five of the most popular holiday movies!
