IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) IMMORALITY AND MORALITY

Though I was always aware of the problem, only recently have I discovered the statistical reality of In Vitro Fertilization (“IVF”). Because a high percentage of the embryos used in IVF die for some reason, according to many studies IVF kills more embryos per year than does abortion, i.e., PREBORN. Of course, the Pro-life response to such reality is the usual looking backwards morality: IVF is immoral and must be illegal. As with abortion, such never works and usually makes the problem worse, see ON A TECHNOLOGICAL PRO-LIFE ANSWER TO ABORTION. Instead, the moral answer should be to look forward so as to use technology to solve technological problems — including declining fertility in the Christian West —- as I argued should be done with abortion. IVF and associated artificial uteri are technologies that will solve many practical problems that cause personal and social misery and immorality in life — including declining fertility in the Christian West.

The age old battle of the sexes can finally end: all men not just the wealthiest will no longer need to chase women for purposes of reproduction and all women not just the wealthiest will be free to spend their youngest and most fertile years working like men instead of reproducing and spending those years on childcare —- which according to feminists is what they should and do want. Not only will women find the liberation that they are seeking, but so will men. The combination of IVF and artificial uteri will allow all men to reproduce by artificial surrogacy instead of by having to marry or by having a baby mama — they will be freed from the misery of having to pay for sex either indirectly by the expenses of marriage or directly by the expenses and misery of having to compete with the top ten percent of men with whom ninety percent of women want to reproduce (a competition that at least 80% of men throughout history lose and thus die without reproducing). Of course, most men will still have to work and save money to pay for artificial surrogacy but most men have to work and pay for sex and reproduction anyway — at least this way they will not have to deal with the additional grief of having to deal with a wife or baby-mama. For women, not only will they make good money by selling their eggs, they will also be able to avoid men for purposes of reproduction and avoid the misery of nine months of pregnancy of which they constantly whine. Sex will be reduced to simply being sex and family life will be made an end-in-itself for couples who want to be married or just to be a couple. With the development of fembots and menbots, coupling can be avoided entirely if an individual wants to avoid it.

Christian morality should have no problem with this solution to the age-old battle of the sexes. No where in Christian Dogma is there any foundational argument for marriage as a means to Salvation. For Christianity, celibacy is the perfect life that leads one to Salvation; sex and marriage are simply the means for orderly reproduction that are limited to this life and are more a source of temptation and sin than of virtue. There is no statement anywhere in the Old or New Testament that praises marriage specifically or fornication in general as virtues — it is their absence that is praised and fornication outside of marriage is of course a sin. Only about 1% to 3% of canonized Catholic saints were married. So, if you want to find Christian Salvation in all its Saintly fullness, it seems you need to avoid both fornication and marriage. Perfection of IVF and artificial uteri will allow for even the most celibate of individuals to reproduce. In theory, it will allow all individuals to dedicate their lives to personal salvation and the salvation of their children while still allowing for obedience to the Christian God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply”; this command appears multiple times in the Bible as both a physical command to populate the earth and a spiritual mandate to spread God's message.

Further, reproduction through artificial surrogacy will allow for Christian society to prosper regardless of whether individuals want to reproduce or not. Instead of having children raised by one parent or two parents who may or may not be good and decent parents, reproduction by technological IVF and artificial uteri will allow for Christian Villages to raise children: the Shakers had the right Christian idea, they just lacked the technology. Communist communes did not work and led to tyranny because they worshiped the atheistic State and Power-as-an-end-in-itself. Christian villages should be able to succeed where they failed or Christianity is not a true religion nor worth it as a practical solution to the problem of the lowering fertility in Western Technological Society.

The popular worship of the nuclear family is a fairly recent concept in history and more of a con than a reality. In the modern world, for first marriages the likelihood of divorce is about 45% which goes up for further marriages. Such reality leads to the reality that single-parent families raise about 70% of children in the Lower Social Classes. When we factor in the amount of marriages that involve sexless or loveless marriage, the misery factor for nuclear families is well above 50% and is not a pleasant nor loving place to raise children. This misery factor is not as bad for the Upper Classes as it is for the Lower Classes because the Upper Classes can get away with it because they have money and power. The concept of the nuclear family was always a con from the Upper Classes: between multiple wives, ex-wives, concubines, mistresses, whores, and whatever, the Upper Classes were always and are now raising their children more in a small village of Power than a nuclear family of love. Think of the so-called Kennedy “Family”. Yeah, right. The Kennedy Harem Village would be a more accurate description. “Side-chicks” and “cheating” destroy and ruin Lower Class families into divorces, whereas “mistresses” and “affairs” keep the Upper Class entertained in marriages between divorces. True Christian Villages operated by educated, loving, and caring persons who want to raise educated, loving, and caring children can be created and maintained by IVF and artificial uteri. Such Villages will finally allow for an equality of family life between Upper and Lower Classes.

Of course, the near-sighted Pro-Life argument against the above is that “babies are dying” and “will continue dying” in IVF procedures and so they must be stopped through illegality now and immediately. Sounds nice but that is all it is: aesthetics over reality. Putting one’s need to feel good above actually doing Good is immoral. Just as with abortion, the law will not help: because of technology and the Upper Class control of its Power, there are more abortions now than there were before Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization finally succeeded in reversing Roe v. Wade. ON A TECHNOLOGICAL PRO-LIFE ANSWER TO ABORTION. To defeat immorality in technological technique, one must use technological technique not just preach nice-sounding words. Yes, the killing will continue until IVF and artificial uteri are so perfected that the killing of embryos becomes a rare and unintentional accident. However, the killing will continue for much longer and result in more dead babies by having the perfection of this technique delayed any longer than technically necessary.

Once again, I submit that If Christianity wants to regain its moral authority, it cannot do it by surrendering to the Law as its protector and arbitrator of morality. It must do it by the only independent power Technological Society and its Law recognizes: technological power.
