I think we are at a point where its no longer a question of

Can AI replace human care? rather

How do we use AI to make human care more accessible and effective?

I found this fascinating JMIR study which compared an AI chatbot to a traditional nurse hotline for mental health support during COVID-19.

The headline numbers looked similar.

↳ Nurse hotline → No significant changes

↳ Head-to-head → No statistical difference between interventions

The completion rates told a completely different story.

↳ AI chatbot group → 0% dropout (62/62 completed)

↳ Nurse hotline group → 34% dropout (21/62 didn’t complete)

This isn’t just about clinical efficacy.

It’s about accessibility and operational impact.

Now, if you think about it operationally,

↳ Triage and screening handled by AI frees up human clinicians for complex cases.

↳ 24/7 availability means intervention when people need it, not when the schedule allows.

↳ Consistent quality means every patient gets the same baseline level of care

Immediate documentation means clinicians spend time on care, not paperwork.

Here are some interestingpoints for all healthcare leaders.

So i think this Hong Kong study is part of a larger shift in healthcare.

And yes, we still have to deal with Compliance, Secuirity and Data protection.

But we’re moving from a model where

human expertise is (or will become) the bottleneck,

to one where, human expertise is the differentiator.

↳ AI provides the baseline. Humans provide the breakthrough.

↳ AI ensures consistency. Humans provide innovation.

In that case well what are some questions we should be asking.

↳ How can AI make human healthcare providers more effective?

↳ What routine tasks are we asking clinicians to do that could be automated?

↳ How do we use AI to extend care to the millions who have no access to it?

↳ What does “good enough” care look like, and how do we scale it?

This study suggests we’re on the right track, even if we’re still figuring out the details.
