Imagine this arrives tomorrow:
“Hey, someone recommended you. Can you send me your portfolio?”
Good news.
Exactly the kind of message you’ve been waiting for.
Except...
your portfolio is the version from 2022.
Your best project isn’t there.
Your About page still says you’re at the company you left eight months ago.
One case study says “Coming soon.”
Or maybe there’s no embarrassing old portfolio at all.
Because there is...
no portfolio.
The version you actually want people to see?
That’s somewhere between your head, Figma, Notion and a folder called:
FINAL_PORTFOLIO_v7_REAL_FINAL.
:)
Suddenly the portfolio you’ve been meaning to finish “when you have time” has a deadline:
now.
That’s the weird thing about portfolios.
They rarely feel urgent...
until they’re extremely urgent.
One designer who joined Build Hour, Alexandra, had actually managed something impressive:
She got jobs without a portfolio.
Then she moved into freelance.
She already had two clients.
Recommendations had carried her surprisingly far.
And eventually even she reached the point of:
Maybe it’s time I actually have a portfolio.
I think that’s an important story.
Because Build Hour isn’t only for somebody starting their design career who has no idea what goes into a portfolio.
It’s also for experienced designers whose actual ability has quietly moved ahead of the thing representing them online.
And that gap bothers me.
Because an unfinished portfolio doesn’t necessarily cost you a job.
Sometimes it’s subtler than that.
You don’t apply.
You don’t send the link.
You postpone the introduction.
You think:
“I’ll reach out once I’ve updated my portfolio.”
You wait until you’re ready.
Meanwhile...
opportunities don’t know you’re almost ready.
They just arrive.
So this is my last email about this.
In a few hours, the 36-hour Build Hour event ends.
Until then:
Self-paced — $56.96 instead of $89
Guided Group — $95.36 instead of $149
Portfolio VIP — $159.36 instead of $249
Use:
36HOURS
for 36% off.
After the deadline, the code stops working and all three go back to their normal prices.
Your portfolio does not need to be perfect.
Actually, it doesn’t even need to be finished.
It needs to exist.
Then you make it better.
Then better again.
That’s how I build too.
Design.
Build.
Ship.
Repeat.
So maybe the next time someone asks:
“Can you send me your portfolio?”
you won’t need a disclaimer.
You’ll just say:
“Sure. Here’s the link.”
