America turns 250 this July 4th, and we felt reflective about this moment here at Unshackled given the work we do.
For two and a half centuries, this country has done one thing better than anywhere else in the world: it has attracted the world’s most ambitious people and given them room to build — by offering competitive and open capital markets, a culture of risk taking, access to capital, and density of talent. All the conditions necessary to innovate and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
The chips powering the AI revolution were designed by someone born in Taiwan. The payments infrastructure moving trillions of dollars was built by two brothers from Ireland. The rockets that made America a space power again were engineered by a kid from South Africa. The mRNA platform that changed medicine was developed by scientists from Turkey and France.
None of them were born here — and yet all of them left home to build here.
At Unshackled Ventures, we write the first check into founders who arrive in this country with a vision and no guarantee they get to stay. We’ve watched what happens when that bet is made early: it changes the trajectory of someone’s life and, in turn, changes the trajectory of an entire industry.
For America’s 250th, we wanted to celebrate the 250 innovators who have built the fabric of America’s innovation economy over the last 30 years. This is a list of 250 builders — scientists, engineers, and founders who came from somewhere else and changed what’s possible here. The builders on this list founded companies worth trillions of dollars in public markets alone, spanning NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Shopify, SpaceX, and DoorDash. Among the private companies, Stripe, Databricks, and Anthropic add hundreds of billions more. They represent 58 countries of origin across 12 industries and have collectively created millions of jobs worldwide.
The bar for inclusion was simple: did they found something that changed an industry, build lasting infrastructure, or move the frontier forward.
This country has always been built by people who chose it. Here are 250 of them — and the mark they’ve left on the world.
