Donald Trump was caught on camera this week holding the exact kind of staff-prepared “cheat sheet” that Republicans once treated as smoking-gun evidence of Joe Biden’s alleged dementia.
If the “cheat sheet” proved it for Biden, what does it prove for Trump? Don’t expect anyone in Trump’s orbit to answer that question anytime soon. Either way, this kind of hypocrisy needs to be called out at every turn, and that’s where UnPresidented comes in. But don’t forget: Independent journalism only survives if the readers who depend on it choose to support it.
UnPresidented runs entirely on reader support and stays editorially independent thanks to those of you who choose to fund it. A paid subscription works out to roughly 20 cents a day, and that small commitment is what guarantees this newsletter keeps arriving in your inbox. If you’re able, sign up as a paid subscriber today.
The photo, taken Monday in the Oval Office while Trump met with a sixteen-year-old California lifeguard and the ten-year-old boy he rescued, shows him holding a card that appears to contain photos of the two guests along with instructions.
Progressive commentator David Pakman railed against the blatant hypocrisy during a recent segment on his podcast.
“There are legitimate reasons to examine Donald Trump’s fitness,” Pakman said. “Sixty percent of voters don’t think he has the mental sharpness to be president.”
He then described what the card seemed to contain, explaining that it essentially functioned as a guide in case he got confused about certain details regarding his guests.
“It tells Trump what to do and what to say,” Pakman explained. “Can Donald Trump not even remember who two people are?”
Pakman then explained exactly how Republicans would weaponize such a card against Biden.
“This is exactly the type of thing that Republicans used to say Biden had dementia,” Pakman said. “The pictures would be circled in red. ‘Biden needs pictures to know who’s with’ Fox News would be running it continuously, and right-wing influencers would be saying, ‘Did Biden know where he was? Did Biden know who he was with?’”
He reminded listeners how quickly some television doctors used to diagnose “advanced dementia from 3,000 miles away” whenever Biden held a note card. That standard, Pakman argued, has now vanished.
“If it did prove it about Joe Biden, according to these people, it must also prove it about Donald Trump.”
“What this proves is these Republicans don’t believe their own stupid standards,” Pakman said. “Because when Biden held a card, it was a national emergency. And when Trump holds one, he’s a very busy guy.”
Trump, the oldest president in American history, continues to dismiss questions about his own mental fitness while the visual evidence sits in plain sight.
