Really looking forward to this, Burberry and the V&A have announced “The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon,” a free display running 21 September 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the museum’s Prince Consort Gallery, once home to the V&A’s own textile collection. A combination of rare material from both the Burberry Archive and the V&A sits across three chapters, Invention, tracing Thomas Burberry’s 1879 development of cotton gabardine into military and protective outerwear, Craft, spotlighting the hand-finished collar, House Check lining, storm flap and detachable throat latch, and Creativity, nineteen runway looks spanning Christopher Bailey to current chief creative officer Daniel Lee.

A trench worn by Savile Row tailor Hardy Amies goes on public display for the first time. The V&A already holds 39 Burberry pieces dating from 1908, so interesting to see a coat invented for wartime and picked up by cinema in iconic films has earnt its place in the design canon. It also sets up something bigger, a dedicated Burberry Gallery due in 2028, replacing a Fashion Gallery that hasn't been redeveloped since 1962.
