Angus Bylsma · Unevenly Combined Thoughts

As I obliquely mentioned in my review of Capitalism: A Global History, the way Sven Beckert chooses to engage with the modern economic history literature, especially when it concerns Caribbean slavery, is frustrating. While you can find work by economic historians cited in his footnotes, it is rarely engaged with in the actual text, even when it is relevant to the subject at hand. Beckert seems utterly disinterested in specifically addressing, refuting, or incorporating the sort of causal, quantitative claims often made by economic historians.
