The reason for this post is I feel as if cryptostorm has fell beneath the radar within the VPN industry, it's rarely talked about, never reviewed and I'd like to give them a chance to see how they really are.
About Cryptostorm
Cryptostorm markets themselves as we don't know you, you don't know us type of service, which raises a few red flags and contradictions within it's statement of "for the truly paranoid", if we don't know who you are and who is behind the operations how can we trust you?
The only information I could find related to cryptostorm is it seems to have been "founded" by Douglas Spink an animal abuser and drug smuggler which puts a +1 of trust questionably in my books at least due to being a criminal, you'd think he'd use his own service to cover his tracks or... hiding as a trojan to blackmail, steal from their users.
Lack of transparency
Unlike almost every other mainstream provider, cryptostorm doesn't seem to reveal it's transparency such as seized servers, warrants, load balancing but why would they? they don't have a central office, I can't even find a registered company for them.
Privacy
Alrighty their goal with hashed tokens, non linking payments is actually a genius idea especially financials in various different countries.
Another interesting feature i'd like to talk about is how they offer Tor over VPN rather then VPN over Tor which providers such as Nord give risk to their users by putting it the other way round.
Review & Testing
Well we finally get to the review, and all I have to say is don't use their windows client, it is possibly the worst client I have ever used. Your computer goes to sleep? yeah so will the VPN, you have to restart it and a complete bug filled mess.
PROS
- Allows you to use other services before them
- Multihop, Tor, Residential, Port Forwarding
- Completely anonymized design
- Servers have no contact with each other
- Functional Ad & Tracker Blocker
- Reasonably priced and they seem to know what their doing
CONS
- The windows application is garbage
- Still have no clue who is behind the VPN
- Less then average speeds on speedtest.net
- Not many locations compared to competitors
- Lies about the transparency
- Doesn't run RAM only servers (at least I think)
- No security audits
- Not beginner friendly
Conclusion
Should you be using them? in short, no. If you decide you want to give it a go purchase the $2 week plan first.
Cryptostorm is a unique VPN and I have to admit I did enjoy using it, I may actually purchase a lifetime token at some point.
