Disasters happen.
We can’t really do anything about them. That’s part of why they’re so devastating in the first place. You’re completely at the mercy of whatever disaster is about to happen and you just have to worry about surviving. Unfortunately though disasters don’t just impact you, they impact everyone around you. If you’re lucky, the disaster is small enough that only a small number of people will actually end up getting hurt or killed. Hopefully you can escape it and the people you care about can be saved as well but not everyone will. Some people will choose to sacrifice themselves to help rescue others who they care about or maybe even those who are more likely to survive. People who are willing to sacrifice themselves for their family members are usually the older ones. They don’t have as much life to live if they survive the disaster. Which means it makes sense to focus more on the people who will grow up knowing what the impact was.
It’s a sad reality but one that can’t be avoided, a lot like disasters themselves. Those who are more likely to survive are more important than those who will die sooner. Although the older people have more knowledge and wisdom that might not be the most important thing in the wake of a disaster. Being able to survive is more important and will teach you all kinds of things about the new world that you’re going into. Largely because the world is going to change after the disaster impacts them. Things like buildings and coast lines and people will be gone afterwards. Someone has to be able to rebuild that place which was destroyed.
This becomes even more important the larger the disaster is. Earthquakes and tidal waves and tornadoes will do different amounts of damage but the more of them you have in one place the worse the disaster ends up being. People will often panic the larger the disaster and that will have a different kind of impact. No matter how much you might want to deal with the terrible impact of buildings being destroyed and losing your possessions, what it really changes is what you think about human beings. The worse things someone you know or care about does when they know a disaster is coming the less you’ll think of the people who survive. Thankfully in a lot of cases people will help others and it might just make you feel better about the people who survived if you see it.
Deep Impact is fundamentally about the impact of disaster. While the crew of the Messiah are doing their best to save the world from the impact of a comet that could kill everyone, it’s not just about them. There’s also those who are living on Earth who have to deal with what might happen if the plan to save the world doesn’t go the way they hoped. Especially when it doesn’t and there will be people who die as a result. No one is really safe from the impact of the disaster and there’s nothing they can do about it.
That’s the impact of disaster.
