It has been a very long road to get to here. The first (and only) comic book series I’ve written, DEVIL’S CLAW, is a 3-part miniseries featuring the titular character.
Devin Goodwell lost everything in life that mattered to him. To pick up the pieces of his shattered life, he turns to the church for guidance. But grief still consumes him, and in his moment of weakness the Devil tempts him with the strength he so desperately desires. Devin also discovers a nemesis in Slick Puppy, the cold-blooded leader of the Pack. Slick Puppy’s own quest for revenge puts him on a collision course with Devin, which drives Devin over the edge—to become the Devil’s Claw. However, his newfound strength will not come without a price.
As much as I love humor, DEVIL’S CLAW is a different kind of story. DEVIL’S CLAW was born out of the dread of loss, and how in these dark times we are fragile and vulnerable. It forever changes you, and it challenges you to cope and carry on.
DEVIL’S CLAW has become even more personal to me and time passes. Since I wrote it back in 2005, I have had my share of first hand experiences with extreme loss, such as the death of both of my parents the past few years.
This book made me very emotional while writing it. I cried more than a little while writing this story. Why? Because I could feel the anguish of the main character. And I channeled all those feelings into the script.
I launched it on the wrong platform. Indiegogo’s promises led me to dip my foot in the pool there, despite that had no community there and I’ve already been developing an audience on Kickstarter. Live and learn!
I put all the individual books in one project, and not giving this new community time to get familiar with me over time. Yup…my bad.
Putting out multiple different print products in one crowdfund was a catastrophic miscalculation. I hit the funding goal, however it was not enough to print five different books in scale, resulting in a short printed book to fulfill orders—no extra copies to allow for audience growth. Doh!
In lieu of my crowdfunding snafu that crippled my audience, DEVIL’S CLAW #1 will be FREE on GlobalComix. If you read one book this week, I humbly ask for you to read DEVIL’S CLAW, and I encourage you to follow and comment on my book there.
I hope you enjoy this book almost as much as it meant for me to get it out into the world.
All my best,
Mark Z
