You’re just trying to run from the law, to find a place to lay low for a while. But this girl you happen upon in the back alley behind a pet store she works at? She’s weird. And yet, you can’t seem to stay away. Maybe she could be the way to skirt the law for a spell. Maybe she’s the right kind of weird. Either way, you feel a pull.
I first heard about Dinner in America (2020), a movie that went under the radar for most people, from clips on TikTok. It’d show Kyle Gallner gazing up at a girl as she sings a weird and catchy song, him tearing up a little. It’d show their first kiss. It’d be a supercut edit of him looking longingly at her, proving that yearning still exists in the 2020s.
Of course, I had to watch it. Clips of yearning just get me. They pull me in.
Dinner in America is about two important people:
A young woman (Emily Skeggs, The Miseducation of Cameron Post), a little off, who has an obsession with the mysterious masked singer of a local hardcore band. She writes him letters. She sends him pictures.
A young man (Kyle Gallner, Smile) who can’t help but get into trouble wherever he goes. He has a secret. He has a connection to her that neither realizes.
As someone who eats up romantic comedies, the grittiness of Dinner in America was a little off-putting at first. Am I supposed to root for these people? Yes, this is Kyle Gallner at his hottest, but is that all there is?
But as the movie goes on and the relationship between the two grows and changes, I can’t help but fall in love, too.
If you need any more inspiration to watch this movie (What, is my word not enough?), fall in love with the original song from the film that will totally stick in your head.
This isn’t a musical, though. It’s a grittier and more realistic look at two flawed people falling in love. What more reason do you need?
