First Fridays returns today, August 7, with a lineup of talks, walks, dance and markets. The City Council‑backed initiative is a monthly event throughout the summer.
Artist Eoin Turner will be in the Nano Nagle Place on Douglas Street at 6pm to talk about his work, which features prominently in the tomb (pictured above), and the inspiration behind it. Free in, tickets here.
Up the road, in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral, and taking place also at 6pm, writers Judy Kravis and Bláithín Mac Donnell are first up in the cathedral’s August reading series, I’ll be your Mirror. The cathedral will remain open until 9pm. Free in.
Meanwhile, at the Cork Butter Museum in Shandon from 7:30pm, a belated Lughnasadh celebration will feature singer-songwriter Ger Wolfe and friends, as well as Maria Gillen, an award-winning storyteller and set caller. It all promises to be a rambling house of music, song and sets at the Butter Supper Club. Tickets free, but booking required here.
And finally, the Coal Quay, or Cornmarket Street will have a market from 5pm-9pm, and Elizabeth Fort will remain open until 8pm. Free in.
🗣️Ó Bhéal go Beal returns next week with their monthly evening of poetry at The Hayloft in the Long Valley Bar. The format remains the same: poetry film screening, five-word challenge, guest poet and open mic to finish. This month Coventry features strongly in the mix, with both guest poets hailing from the midlands city. Maxi di Poet, Coventry-based with Caribbean roots, describes his poetry as therapy and healing, a space where he envelops, embodies, and dances in every feeling, while Dangerounouse, a poet and cleaner, is known for crafting poems that are willing to entertain the silly, serious, and strange. His work weaves together everything from cats and crackheads to Sunday dinners at your nan's. Free in. All welcome.

☀️🕶️Solar Eclipse: The partial eclipse of the sun, coming next Monday, August 12, will see 96% of the sun blocked by the moon, which will bring about a noticeable reduction in daylight. The eclipse will begin at 6:15pm, reach maximum at 7:13pm, and end at 8:08pm. MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory, in collaboration with Cork City Council’s Night Time Economy initiative, will be hosting a number of events locally from 18:00 – 20:30 with free solar eclipse glasses available for safe viewing and a team of ambassadors to answer your queries.
Public viewing events will take place (no booking required) at Blackrock Castle Observatory, Tramore Valley Park and Bell’s Field. And remember, don’t look directly at the eclipse!
🗣️Taking about music at the Boole: Ahead of his gig in the Savoy tomorrow, August 6, DJ and radio host Donal Diner will be in the Boole Library in UCC where he will be hosting what promises to be a really good discussion on all things music, musicians, photography and film. Joining him are Brian 'B+' Cross and Will Holland. Cross is a photographer who has shot album covers for the likes of Damian Marley, DJ Shadow, J Dilla, Madlib, Mos Def, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington and Q-Tip; he was also Director of Photography on the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. Holland is an internationally renowned producer, composer and DJ whose genre-crossing work has bridged Latin, jazz, soul and electronic music for more than two decades. He's also a longtime collaborator of Cross. Free in.

🎭Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis, directed by Tom Creed and performed by Marty Rea, finishes up its three-day run at the Cork Arts Theatre tomorrow, August 8, ahead of its move to the Dublin Fringe Festival. More like a poem or a diary entry than a conventional play, it's a raw exploration of clinical depression and was penned by Kane before she died by suicide at the age of 28. Presented by Once Off Productions, this stripped-back solo performance is a rare opportunity to witness a contemporary classic that hasn't seen a major professional production in Ireland for over two decades.

🎻The Meliora Quartet, featuring Cillian Ó Cathasaigh, violin; Seán Hurley, violin; Kseniia Yershova, viola; and Alina Obreja, cello, will take to the former altar at the Triskel tomorrow, August 8, as part of the NSQF Young Artists summer tour. The programme starts fresh with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw's Blueprint from 2016 before winding back to include pieces from Webern's 'Langsamer Satz' (slow piece) and Beethoven's B flat major quartet Op. 130.
