Old Ernest Tubb sang this diddly back in the day. Talks about the hypocrisy of these particular sets of church goers.

“Saturday Satan, Sunday saint

Fooling your neighbors, that's what you think

Reading the good Book, singin' the hymns

Come Monday morning and it's back to a life of sin”

But you know what Ernest Tubb, your honky tonk music caused all my sinning in the first place, so yes I am a hypocrite. I’m a church-going scumbag. I’m a virtue-stealing maniac. I’m a spiritual has-been.

And that’s who’s in these pews every Sunday. And good thing! If the week were 8 days long you’d be singing about the baphomet incarnate.

So there’s a rhythm to the week that lets us take a day off from the curse of the plow and the sin of usury. On the sabbath God has said you must not sin, “Keep the sabbath day holy”. Which I have taken to mean “Hey Kid, you can take the day off from sinning today and sit in this breezy corridor and try to sing on key and maybe say Hi to your one church friend”

So yes. I am the Saturday Satan muahahaha. But thanks for the tune.

(I’ll be recording a new song next week on my birthday and I’ll post here in two weeks)
