I Like My Wife

See how that Title holds some buoyancy? I do like my wife, but that’s not what I promised on my wedding day

—to like her.

A few summers ago we were out camping with her extended family. ‘neath the pines, and by the lake, as the sun went down it grew time to start a fire. The folks had caught wind that we had gotten engaged, and as we gathered ‘round, the uncles started crackin’ bottles open. Beer flowed in and unsolicited advice poured out.

But one line stuck with me to this day. Uncle Joe, a twice-married Police officer, recounted his first marriage, and he said this:

“Love is easy… when you like each other. Don’t stop liking each other.”

Jesus had a few things to say about Love and not much about “Like”.

Love your brothers. Love your enemies. But I look around, and this LOVE thing might be insurmountable. And Maybe “Like” was a given.

If you’re young and out in the dating field, try this: go up to a girl you fancy and with all your might, declare your love for her. How did that go?

Well, that’s what happens when we Resort to Love.
