And now we're 20
Today is the 20th anniversary of the launch of TravellerMap. Since I'm lazy, go read the 10th anniversary post for some history.
Updates to the Traveller Map, an interactive web-based map for the Traveller universe.

2018 was a bit of a slow year for the site, and a busy year for me, so I didn't end up putting up the usual January post this year. Quick recap of what's happened since Jan 2018: Added or updated various apocryphal sectors: Foreven (Imperial Staple), Fulani (TTT), Meshan (NCR), Marischal, c/o Graham Donald Updated Distant Fringe setting by Ade Stewart Updated Orion OB1 setting by WG Zeist Added…
This year has had ups and downs. Due to real-life distractions I haven't spent as much time on the site as I'd like. But reviewing the change logs, it has been a busy here. Here are some of the highlights.... ( Past Overviews ) Data Overview 2018 But first... offline A highlight of the year was getting to meet and hang out with Marc Miller at TravellerCon/USA: Joshua Bell and Marc Miller at…
A few days ago I pushed an update to the site. Although everything tested fine locally, apparently one of the included changes introduced a serious bug impacting performance. I haven't tracked down the cause yet, but I've rolled back the code which seems to have helped: The black line spiking up is CPU usage. Normally it's around 2 minutes per hour (i.e. the host machine is actually sitting idle…
It's that time of year when look at the current state of the Traveller Map and the changes that happened over the last 12 months. ( Past Overviews ) General Updates Following the passing of Don McKinney just over a year ago a lot of the momentum for the Traveller 5 Second Survey project was lost, but contributors to the site kept iterating on and providing new data. Some of the updates include:…
Similar post made over on Citizens of the Imperium . After a long break, I can announce some progress on the T5SS effort. Marc continues to have a high level mandate to create a stable, consistent data set for the OTU as a tool for authors. This allows him (and others) to e.g. understand the impact of the Wave on charted space from 1105 to 1900, or figure how how the Vilani formed the Ziru Sirka…
Traveller uses the term milieu (plural: milieux) to describe a particular setting or era. Milieu include the Golden Age (described in Classic Traveller and Mongoose Traveller , circa 1105), the Rebellion (described in MegaTraveller , circa 1120), the New Era (circa 1202, 1248), Milieu 0 (from T4 , from 0 through 300), Interstellar Wars (from GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars ), and even alternate…
Once a year we look at the current state of the Traveller Map and the changes that happened over the last 12 months. ( Past Overviews ) This year starts on a somber note, having lost some luminaries in the Traveller community, most notably Don McKinney who was heading up the Traveller 5 Second Survey project to produce an official dataset for the OTU. Don was responsible for sending me updates for…
... is coming soon. SPOILERS: Despite the sad events of 2015, it's been a huge year for data and there's been a recent influx of data. I'm waiting for it to calm down a bit before posting. Hang on, travellers...
@TravellerMap https://twitter.com/travellermap Because 140 characters is about my attention span these days.
The Vargr Extents and Julian Protectorate get some love in the latest T5SS data drop, with the following sectors newly "in review": Tuglikki (by David Drazul ) Provence (by David Drazul ) Windhorn (by John G. Wood ) Meshan (by Michael R. Mikesh) Mendan (by Michael R. Mikesh, from Challenge #49) Amdukan (by Michael R. Mikesh, from Challenge #52) Also, way off on the Spinward edge of charted space,…
My favorite sector, Far Frontiers , has started review by the T5SS! The sector is the home of the FASA adventures such as the Sky Raiders trilogy. The Jungleblut subsector was detailed in Trail of the Sky Raiders . The Alsas subsector was detailed by Bill Fawcett in "Privateer", an article in Gameplay magazine. Dale Kemper produced a manuscript including these details and fleshing out the rest of…
Search results now include things that would show up as labels on the map - usually the names of polities but a few things like J-4 and J-5 routes across rifts. As always, feedback appreciated! ... 日本からの訪問者を歓迎 SFロールプレイング・ゲーム トラベラー
How long does it take to get from Regina (SPIN 1910) to Woochiers (SPIN 2207) at Jump-1? A long, long time: I've added a route finding feature. Hit the route button to the right of the search box. Start/end location can be entered as Sector Hex , e.g. Spinward Marches 1910 T5SS sector abbreviations are okay: SPIN 1910 works too Otherwise, the map uses the nearest matching world name. So you can…
We (my family, not the royal "we", and certainly not the vast megacorp behind the site) are moving in a few weeks. I just finished packing up my Traveller hardcopies into boxes for the move. This will limit my ability to double-check things for the rare documents I have that aren't available in digital form. Service of the site should not be disrupted in any way since I don't host it myself and…
Ten years ago today, back when dinosaurs roamed the Internet, I made a post to the Traveller Mailing List announcing an online interactive map of the Official Traveller Universe : http://tml.travellerrpg.narkive.com/7rVE3XSg/hello-tml I popped by http://jtas.net/travelleratlas/ and thought "cool!" at first, then realized that most of the maps had been generated by hand. Aaaaaaah! That just makes…
(Disclaimer: not an April Fool's joke) I made a slight tweak to the way routes are rendered. Old: New: Look closely at how the routes intersect the world disc. Previously they came extremely close. So close, in fact, that they actually are drawn first - right to the center of the world! Then the world is rendered by painting over the routes with the background color, then the world itself renders.…
DonM sent out a new T5SS data drop, adding Spica to the set of "in reviewed" sectors, and graduating the Aslan sectors like Riftspan Reaches , Ealiyasiyw and Dark Nebula out of review to "official". Other tidbits from the drop: Hive Federation now has T5SS allegiance code: HvFd Embassies have have base code E Base code X, previously reserved for Zhodani Relay Station, is slated to be replaced by…
"Happy New Year!" - and you thought I'd forgotten. Past Overviews What was new in 2014? Added Tsadra by Dale Jenkins Added Koog , Harbinger , Kteex! and Nadir by David Blalock Swapped out Foreven with official preserve data Switched for Paranoia Press published data for Vanguard Reaches and Beyond Moved Varan out of charted space Several T5SS data drops Otherwise... a quiet year.
Search now supports an in: prefix for limiting the search to a particular sector: t* in:"Solomani Rim" - find worlds starting with T in the Solomani Rim reg* in:spin - find worlds starting with REG in the Spinward Marches uwp:*-F in:Deneb - find Tech Level 15 worlds in Deneb sector Use quotes for sector names with spaces, but the sector name match is a prefix match so an abbreviation (spin, solo,…
You can now access the site via the alternative URL: https://travellermap.com (Note: that's 'https' as in 'secure', and no 'www') Not that the site stores any user data, but this (in theory) means that any data you post for rendering using the various tools can't be observed or modified by malicious network denizens thanks to end-to-end encryption. And if someone hijacks the site you'll get a…
