Hey community! Two pitch calls from publications doing serious work, both closing within the next ten days.

📍 Oregon Humanities Magazine (oregonhumanities.org)

The opportunity Oregon Humanities Magazine pays all contributors and welcomes writers at all experience levels. Work from the publication has been reprinted in the Pushcart Prize anthology, Best American Essays, Utne Reader, and High Country News, and featured on This American Life. The Winter 2027 theme is “Passage” — transitions, journeys, rivers, roads, rites of passage, and motion in all its forms.

What they’re looking for

  • Personal essays that push beyond simple narrative to consider larger thematic questions

  • Journalistic or researched pieces with a clear angle and published clips

  • Stories connecting to the theme of “Passage”: voyages, transitions, physical routes, rites of passage, movement of people, languages, and traditions

  • All experience levels welcome

  • Read past issues and contributor guidelines before submitting

  • Send one proposal or one draft to editors@oregonhumanities.org

  • Include your full name and place of residence

  • 💰 Compensation: $750 to $1,500 depending on length and complexity

  • 📅 Deadline: August 17, 2026

  • 🌍 Who should apply: Oregon residents only, all experience levels, 1,500 to 4,000 words

The opportunity Fuller commissions investigations, enterprise features, constructive stories, analysis, and explainers connecting global audiences primarily in the US and Europe to the lived experiences of women and gender-diverse people worldwide. They are actively seeking pitches for two upcoming editions.

Current open editions

  • Water scarcity through a gender lens: humanitarian crises, climate-driven drought, failing water infrastructure, and how women and girls are disproportionately affected or leading solutions. Deadline August 18.

  • Pleasure and Desire. Deadline August 28.

What they’re looking for

  • In-depth original journalism that spotlights systems of oppression

  • Well-told stories with the potential to shape the news agenda or catalyze change

  • Storytellers who can connect US and European audiences to experiences far away and equip readers to act
