Ron Huxley · Trauma Champions

For more than 35 years, I’ve sat with people on some of the hardest days of their lives.

I’ve walked alongside survivors of abuse, first responders, pastors, healthcare workers, educators, parents, foster and adoptive families, and organizational leaders trying to care for people while carrying burdens of their own.

Along the way, I discovered something surprising.

The greatest obstacle to becoming trauma-informed isn’t a lack of information.

It’s knowing how to live it.

There came a season in my own life when I realized my nervous system was trying to protect me.

For years, I had what I called an “open-door policy.” I wanted to help everyone. I believed being available was part of being compassionate.

Then, without realizing it, my open door slowly became a closed one.

I wasn’t becoming less caring.

I was becoming exhausted.

Compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout were quietly reshaping the way I worked and lived. My nervous system was doing exactly what it was designed to do—it was protecting me.

That experience changed how I think about trauma-informed care forever.

Trauma-informed care isn’t just about understanding other people’s stories.

It’s also about learning how to care for ourselves, our teams, and our organizations in ways that allow us to keep showing up without losing ourselves.

Over the years, I’ve watched our field produce incredible books, conferences, podcasts, and certifications.

Information has never been more available.

Yet many organizations still struggle to become truly trauma-informed.

Why?

Because information doesn’t automatically become implementation.

People leave inspired—but unsure what to do next.

Leaders agree with trauma-informed principles—but struggle to build them into culture.

Organizations complete training—but old habits quietly return.

That’s why Trauma Champions exists.

This newsletter is for people who want to move beyond simply knowing about trauma.

It’s for people who want to practice it.
