Orb Ball Devlog 4

This was a polish and refactoring week. Every lord got a simplification pass. I shipped a ton of balance changes. I rewrote the game’s movement system to be more predictable and satisfying. It’s been through many revisions. There are two main changes here. First of all, I refactored how we handle evasion so creatures almost always keep their speed maxed out no matter what. I would rather have an…

Orb Ball Devlog 3

Exciting news: Find a friend and play the latest build right now. Just promise me you’ll leave feedback, as it’s still early days. There’s a built-in feedback form, but you can also email or message me on Discord.

Orb Ball Devlog 2

Devlog 2, right on schedule. I got quite a bit done this week. Most significantly, I finished a huge performance refactor and the game now reliably runs 60 FPS even on lower end devices in later rounds. Here are more details:

Orb Ball Devlog 1

I’ve been working on a game for about a year, tentatively called Orb Ball. I’m going to try publishing weekly, casual progress posts. I’ll grab whatever scraps I have lying around, screenshots or notes or gifs, and talk through them a bit, and write up a changelog too.

Why and how I made a 3D terrain renderer with React + the DOM

I just finished polishing this DOM-based 3D terrain renderer and figured now would be a good time to write about it. Click or use arrow keys to move around, and click-and-drag to rotate:

How I addressed post-launch feedback for Wilderplace

A few big problems with Wilderplace didn’t become clear until after launch. Reviews from Steam players and professional critics were more honest than the (still very useful!) feedback from our small group of testers whom mostly knew me personally. Feedback came in other forms as well: DM’s and emails from stuck or frustrated players, and sudden access to real player metrics. All this feedback…

Summer devlog and a release date announcement

Wilderplace launches on Steam on September 9th. Wishlist it now! Massive thanks to all the testers who helped get the game to this point. We’ve ended our beta test phase and will be focused on pre-release polish until release.

On leaving Mapbox after 12 years

It’s been about nine months since I left Mapbox and the circumstances of my exit didn’t offer much opportunity for closure. I feel a combination of gratitude and resentment that I’m still sorting out. Last week was the one year anniversary of the Mapbox Worker’s Union going public, the event that lead to my departure. So, now seems like an appropriate time to share my story. It may offer some…

Beta 3 release notes

We just published another Wilderplace build to Steam. This is the last significant beta release we plan do before launch. We’ve started getting our launch plan together – check out the new webite and press kit. Thanks again to all the testers that have made these last few beta releases possible. Here’s a summary of what’s new in beta 3.

Beta 2 release notes

We just published the second major Wilderplace beta build to Steam. Beta 2 marks an important milestone: we’ve completed all the game’s artwork and content. We’re very close to finishing – we’ve even got a trailer now! This release wouldn’t be possible without all the honest and detailed feedback from our beta testers. So, if you’re a tester and you’re reading this: thank you!
