“Like the unignited Fire awaits its fuel, so does death wait for you”
🌶️ Big|Brave
Experimental drone/doom, Canada
FFO: Otay:onii, Divide & Dissolve, The Body
Brilliant band Big|Brave is back with the most beautiful album they’ve made so far. No drums, this is a murmuration of notes, sounds, vibrations and they all constantly move. They invoke music out of white noise, as it were. Distortion is a palette, melodies were seemingly hiding within the mist and Big|Brave play with texture, it as if they have the power over every single molecule in the air. I’m totally rambling. This is just really really pretty and I am placing this album very high on my end of the year list.
🌶️ Stormkeep
Melodic black, USA (Vesperian)
FFO: Emperor, Sacramentum, Dimmu Borgir
This release had me a little worried. ‘Tales of Othertime’, their 2021 release, is one of the best melodic black metal albums of the last ten years (#33 on my black metal list) but everything about their newest made me uncomfortable. The weird cover, the unknown label, the singles that were ok. I guess it’s good that this band doesn’t sit still, though, and who would expect that from a band with members from forward thinkers like Wayfarer, Blood Incantation and Lykotonon. And of course the whole album is much more of an experience. I just hope I’ll revisit it more than I’d expect to right now.
🌶️ Iron Reagan
Crossover thrash/punk, USA (Relapse Records)
FFO: Municipal Waste, SOD, Suicidal Tendencies
I thought that this band - a project with members of Municipal Waste and Darkest Hour was done, but they got the original line-up back together and rammed out a new ep. It’s six songs, ten minutes, fucking hard.
🌶️ Genghis Tron
Experimental/electronic, USA (Relapse Records)
FFO: Author & Punisher,
Apparently I missed that this was a cool band. I didn’t know them when they released their best known work (2004-2010) and I ignored their comeback (2020). But the singles for this new album really slapped me in the face. Can’t go around it anymore: this is a cool band.
🌶️ Khemmis
Doom, USA (Nuclear Blast)
FFO: Pallbearer, Spirit Adrift, Elder
It says everything about this release day that such a good Khemmis record is the last one in the row here. But really, it’s fiery, compelling and dynamic - great stuff worthy of a self-titled.
There’s more: Mono (🌶️ post, Japan), an ep from Devourment (slam/brutal death, USA), Goetia (death, USA), Zothique (black, USA), Defiled (death, Japan), a split from Mystifier & Craven Idol (black/death, Brazil & black/thrash, UK), Lex Legion (heavy, international - (ex)members of King Diamond, doing it without him), Nuclear Tomb (🌶️ prog thrash/death, USA), Fyrnask (black, Germany), Ride For Revenge (experimental black, Finland), Fires in the Distance (melodic doom/death, USA) an ep from Defenestration (death, Canada) and Woewarden (atmospheric/depressive black, Australia). The rest is in the playlist!
🌶️ Cult of Luna (atmospheric sludge, Sweden)
🌶️ Mortem (black, Norway)
🌶️ Hulder (black, USA)
🌶️ Chat Pile (noise/sludge, USA)
🌶️ Archgoat (death/black, Finland)
🌶️ Left To Die (death, USA)
🌶️ Emptiness (post death, Belgium)
🌶️ Devildriver (groove/metalcore, USA)
🌶️ Haken (prog, UK)
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Olivia Rodrigo (pop punk, USA)
Next week: Warning, Mork, Einherjer, Witching Hour and Saidan.
