## [R-Type II, Arcade](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/20/r-type-2-arcade/)

_2026-08-20 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Irem's 1989 sequel to their hit shooter, R-Type, is definitely an upgrade to the series, rather than a recycling of parts of the first game (as the other supposed 'sequels' turned out to be).

## [Rick Dangerous 2, Commodore 64](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/19/rick-dangerous-2-commodore-64/)

_2026-08-19 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Rick Dangerous 2 is the 1990 sequel to the original platform game, Rick Dangerous. It was published by Micro Style (a sub-label of Microprose), and was once again developed by Core Design of Derby.

## [Rick Dangerous, Commodore 64](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/18/rick-dangerous-commodore-64/)

_2026-08-18 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Rick Dangerous is a well-known platform game that parodies the tomb-raiding adventures of Indiana Jones. It was developed by Core Design and first published by Firebird Software in 1989.

## [Koronis Rift, Amstrad CPC](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/17/koronis-rift-amstrad-cpc/)

_2026-08-17 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

The Amstrad CPC version of Koronis Rift is very similar to the Atari 8-bit original. The Amstrad's multi-colour graphics mode emulates the Atari graphics so well that you'd have to wonder if it's a clone of Atari's graphics mode... It probably is. :-) Koronis Rift was ported to the Amstrad by Mr. Micro Ltd. - for Lucasfilm Games - and first published by Activision in 1987.

## [Noobow, Game Boy](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/16/noobow-game-boy/)

_2026-08-16 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Developed and published exclusively for the original black and white Game Boy by Irem in 1992, Noobow (aka Nōbow) is a cute platform/puzzle game that was only ever released in Japan. Thankfully, a fan translation patch makes this game playable to non Japanese-speakers.

## [Knuckles’ Chaotix, Sega 32X](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/15/knuckles-chaotix-sega-32x/)

_2026-08-15 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Knuckles' Chaotix is a platform game, published for the Sega 32X in 1995, that is a spin-off from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It features Knuckles the Echidna (who first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3), and a rather unique partner system where characters are tethered to each other by a rubber band.

## [Delta Charge!, ZX Spectrum](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/14/delta-charge-zx-spectrum/)

_2026-08-14 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

This is a conversion of the infamous Commodore 64 shooter, Delta. It was inexplicably re-titled as "Delta Charge!" by Thalamus and was first released for the ZX Spectrum in 1990 - very late in the machine's initial lifetime.

## [Land of the Dead: Road To Fiddler’s Green, XBox](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/13/land-of-the-dead-road-to-fiddlers-green-xbox/)

_2026-08-13 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

This adaptation of George A. Romero's 2005 film, Land of the Dead, was developed by Brainbox Games and published by Groove Games. Road To Fiddler's Green was released not long after the film came out, and it utterly fails to capture any of the 'fun' of the film, or the visual style of it.

## [Super Mario Land, Game Boy](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/12/super-mario-land-game-boy/)

_2026-08-12 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Super Mario Land is a flagship platform game on the Nintendo Game Boy. It was released in April 1989, as one of four launch titles for the console. It is the first handheld entry in the Super Mario series, as well as the first main Mario game not designed by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

## [International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, Megadrive/Genesis](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/11/international-superstar-soccer-deluxe-megadrive-genesis/)

_2026-08-11 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

Converted by German developer Factor 5, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe on the Megadrive is a close port of the Super Nintendo version. Meaning that it's great fun to play, with or without other players. It was first released in 1996 by Konami.

_2026-08-10 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

The NES version of the famous 1981 arcade game, Qix, was developed by Novotrade and published by Taito of America in 1991.

## [Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop, Atari Lynx](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/09/dirty-larry-renegade-cop-atari-lynx/)

_2026-08-09 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

This handheld run-and-gun/beat 'em up hybrid was obviously made to parody the character of Dirty Harry, as portrayed by Clint Eastwood in the films. It was developed by Knight Technologies and published for the Atari Lynx in North America and PAL regions in 1992.

## [Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax, ZX Spectrum](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/08/barbarian-2-the-dungeon-of-drax-zx-spectrum/)

The ZX Spectrum version of Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax was developed by M.C. Lothlorian and first published by Palace Software in 1988.

## [Barbarian, ZX Spectrum](https://thekingofgrabs.com/2026/08/08/barbarian-zx-spectrum/)

_2026-08-08 · Mallo · The King of Grabs_

The Spectrum version of Barbarian is an okay fighting game, but it doesn't quite have the satisfying decapitation animation of the original C64 version...

## [Some single player videogames are more fun when played together](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/some-single-player-videogames-are-more-fun-when-played-together/)

_2026-07-13 · povuh · Povuh_

If you look online, it's easy to find recommendations for good multiplayer / co-operative videogames. My girlfriend and I have especially enjoyed playing games like Portal 2, It Takes Two, Rayman Legends, Overcooked and the Trine series. What we've found however, is that there are a bunch of games we enjoy playing together that are not multiplayer games at all! Because of this, these single player…

## [Exploring videogame worlds with the HUD turned off](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/exploring-videogame-worlds-with-the-hud-turned-off/)

_2026-02-21 · povuh · Povuh_

Lately I've been playing a lot of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom . It's a huge open world game that's fun to explore, with secrets hidden all over the place. One optional feature I'm really enjoying is the Pro HUD setting . This turns off most of the HUD elements such as your health bar (outside of combat), thermometer, control reminders, and most notably the minimap. Having minimaps…

## [The Midwinter Prog Festival is organized specifically for me](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/the-midwinter-prog-festival-is-organized-specifically-for-me/)

_2026-02-08 · povuh · Povuh_

On Saturday Feb 7th we were at the yearly Midwinter Prog Festival here in the Netherlands, featuring five prog rock / metal bands. I often joke it's organized specifically for me, because every year I am already a fan of half the bands, the Tivoli Vredenburg venue is a 10 minute bike ride away from our house, and it's always around my birthday! This time the lineup featured three Norwegian bands…

## [The oldest thing I own (and use!)](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/the-oldest-thing-i-own-and-use/)

_2026-01-26 · povuh · Povuh_

It was just a random thought: What is the oldest thing I own? I'm sure everyone has some old things stored away somewhere. Then I saw 82mhz's post on the same subject so it feels like the perfect time to share! I'm going to answer a slighty variation on this question, though I think the answer is basically the same: What is the oldest thing I own that I actually use or appreciate somewhat…

## [The Golden Spurtle: A wholesome, whole grain documentary tip!](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/the-golden-spurtle-a-wholesome-whole-grain-documentary-tip/)

_2025-12-01 · povuh · Povuh_

While researching a trip to the Scottish Highlands in 2019, we read about the village of Carrbridge and it's yearly Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship . As someone who loves porridge, I was instantly sold! Though I'll admit, the porridge I have most mornings (Brinta instant porridge, with milk, microwaved) is likely considered heresy by true porridge aficionados. In the end, we…

## [Are you prepared for a drinking water crisis?](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/are-you-prepared-for-a-drinking-water-crisis/)

_2025-11-08 · povuh · Povuh_

It was last Saturday at 06:20 in the morning when my phone received a text from the water company Vitens. It stated that the drinking water was contaminated, and 125.000 connections in the city of Utrecht and surrounding areas were affected. By the time I read this message hours later, many supermarkets in the city were already running out of bottled water. Now, it was not a severe contamination.…

## [The horror games I've played in October](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/the-horror-games-ive-played-in-october/)

_2025-10-24 · povuh · Povuh_

October seems like the perfect month to play some scary games, so here are my thoughts on the games I played! Still Wakes The Deep You're part of a team of Scottish workers at an offshore oil rig, and someone has drilled too deep in the ocean floor, awakening something in the progress! The game has some light puzzle, platforming and stealth elements, but otherwise it's mainly a 'walking simulator'…

At the moment there's a global outage of Amazon Web Services , which is disrupting a lot of services online. In the gaming space, most notably affected are big online games like Fortnite and Roblox. As someone primarily playing single player games, I thought I would be fine. Unfortunately, Ubisoft decided it was very important that their offline single player game 'Prince of Persia: The Lost…

## [Cycling without digital navigation, using the Dutch bicycle node network](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/cycling-without-digital-navigation-using-the-dutch-bicycle-node-network/)

_2025-10-18 · povuh · Povuh_

This Saturday was a lovely sunny autumn day in the Netherlands. A perfect day to go for a small cycling trip and see the trees changing colours. We went to visit the Bomenmuseum Gimborn , which is a nice nature area that takes us roughly 1.5 hours to reach by bicycle (at a casual pace). For cycling in the Netherlands, a great way to navigate is by using the fietsknooppunten (bicycle nodes)…

## [Online comics and AI art](https://povuh.bearblog.dev/online-comics-and-ai-art/)

_2025-10-07 · povuh · Povuh_

At this point, I feel my RSS feed collection is basically a fully featured newspaper or magazine. There's news, opinion pieces, reviews, and articles on all sorts of specific topics. The only thing missing is a sports section that I would skip every time! It also features a bunch of online comics, which offer a welcome break from the longer reads. Today The Oatmeal had an interesting one, where he…
