Came here for some general gardening advice. I've had a garden every year for 4 years in a row with little success. I feel like I have learned a lot but I am about to plant another round for winter gardening and I am sick of AI plant websites just spewing non factual information haha.

I have many Buckets with holes for drainage and such. Any time I turn around I have a different idea. So I have buckets and pots with holes in wrong spots. I’m tempted to just throw them away but my wife says no. Any ideas? Right now they are stacked along the fence. big rockpile

We spotted our 1st flyer! For us this is the Swallow, house martin and/or swift. The latter for us is rarely before May, but the others are THIS month. Very special for us is to spot the first of the year, for me it was a Swallow, but hey at that height and that speed it could have easily been a House Martin... Beautiful either way !

## [Storing tomatoes in wood ash](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/storing-tomatoes-in-wood-ash.35181/)

_2026-08-23 · smitty55 · Gardening Forums_

I plan on trying this old Amish method of storing ripe tomatoes. Don't know if I will do any canning of sauce this year so this could be a great way to stretch them out for fresh eating. The main concern I have is that my Greeks are very thin skinned and from what I've researched it works best on thicker skinned varieties. So I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience trying this out and…

## [Sakura tree](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/sakura-tree.34643/)

_2026-08-22 · Amy1022 · Gardening Forums_

Hello all, I have just received a sakura ( Yoshino cherry blossom) tree, about 6 or 7 inches tall, in the mail. It arrived with leaves and appears healthy. I mean to let it grow until it is about 1 foot and half to 2 feet in height, before I transport it to the ground. What do I need to do to care for it in the meantime, (when can I transfer to a bigger pot?) and is my plan ok? Fertilizer? Can I…

Many of us grow veggies in a garden, or buy them at farmers markets. Sure would be hice to be able to go to a section and look to see if there was a recipe on there for a veggie I want to cook. Till then Al's Navy Bean soup. In 1907 the US senate passed a resolution that bean soup would be on the menu every day in the senate dinning room when ever they were in session. My self I want pure…

Hey fellow gardeners My tomato plants were struggling last month with yellowing leaves and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I found this free app called Chlora that lets you take a photo of the affected leaf and it identifies the disease and gives you treatment steps. It actually saved my harvest I'm not affiliated with them, just wanted to share since it really helped me. Has anyone else…

## [Thinking about growing a "good" Apple tree in MA](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/thinking-about-growing-a-good-apple-tree-in-ma.35175/)

My mother has a pear tree that gets almost no pears some years, but this year it has hundreds. Its an old tree so the pears are huge. Just what you'd like, if you liked pears. I, however, do not like pears. I've often thought off and on about growing an apple tree in my yard, but in the end I always chicken out because I don't want to constantly be picking up fallen, rotten apples. But I'm looking…

Also, multiflora rose hips which are quite tasty, even though they're so tiny Before that American persimmon in December, black walnuts can still be found, and Osage orange balls I dug up a big Greenbriar hoping it would have starchy tubers under it like the Texas variety, no luck And i…

## [What am I doing wrong with potatoes?](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/what-am-i-doing-wrong-with-potatoes.35170/)

_2026-08-21 · LikeTiffany · Gardening Forums_

My potatoes all died earlier than expected, and the entire green withered and disappeared. My soil quality was poor and I did no pest control. I could see bite marks but never saw the actual pests... I also did wrong by overwatering before I realized it but once I stopped that they continued to die like this. I thought potatoes were easy but is this just a result of my poor gardening? lol

## [Powdery Mildew on Squash](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/powdery-mildew-on-squash.35169/)

_2026-08-21 · LikeTiffany · Gardening Forums_

Alright y'all... the dreaded powdery mildew is upon my pumpkins & squash. How do I get rid of this naturally? As you can see, my chickens nibble the leaves through the fence, so it's gotta be something safe for them. Also, is it normal for so many pumpkin blossoms to die off like this or am I doing something wrong? I water about every other day at this point in their growth and they were planted…

Ok so 2 years ago, I planted a pair of perennial sunflowers along the back edge of my lawn. They died in the winter and the next year (last year), they came back. Died again, and this year, each spot has a whole bunch of these things growing. Are these them? I can't tell if these are weeds or sunflowers! If they're weeds, I want to yank em quick! But of course if they're sunflowers, Thats great…

Someone mentioned tracking the number of steps they take each day. Presumably there are numbers that medical folks would like for us to reach each day. I'm interested in comparing numbers...with anyone and everyone willing to compare. Seems like it would be fun. Not intended to be competitive or any infringement on personal info. Just fun. Let's see if anyone else sees some fun in it. Yesterday my…

Here is Arkansas we have had a couple of weeks of 101-105 temps during the day. I have tomatoes planted in containers on my west facing deck that look very bedraggled. I trim off the sunburned parts only to find more each day. Some flowers but no fruits and the fruits on the vine are very small. Each day I water these poor folks, thinking that if I can keep them alive they might produce when the…

So, we all like showing off our gardens. Sometimes, at least for me, I want to share a photo or two but I don't want to make an entirely new thread for it. That's why I created this. This can be a place where we all can share our gardens on any given day, or every day. Photos, videos, whatever you'd like to share. I created a similar thread over on the pond forum and it's gone well. I'll start it…

Would love to see what is pollinating your plants in your garden today. I'll start with two critical ones the Monarch American Lady and the honeybee. This butterfly landed precisely where a milkweed plant was located last year. Coincidence? Honeybees working on ring-of-fire sunflowers..

So I'd asked this question below in several places. But I never got a response out of it. I hope to pose it here. I live in a state with ... cold winters and freezing. I want to know how big and how long you have to have young trees or tree seedlings in the ground in the fall before winter to have them still be able to get through the winter? Like... I think they might need to have a certain size…

## [Mason Jar Canning Question?](https://www.gardening-forums.com/threads/mason-jar-canning-question.35173/)

_2026-08-20 · nao57 · Gardening Forums_

So... mason jar canning was first invented supposedly in the 1850s. Although there was a woman involved with learning how to can the vegetables, the guy came up with the jar idea. Don't think they are related. But it occurred to me that at some point they might not have had rubber to make the rubber rings for that process. Did they ever use pine sap or pine tar to seal the jars? Could that work if…
