## [Forest residues and renewable hydrogen: Casale to integrate Finland’s Loonbird bio-e-methanol complex](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/21/casale-flying-forest-loonbird-bio-e-methanol/)

Flying Forest has selected Casale — a SPIN member headquartered in Lugano — as integrator and technology provider for Project Loonbird in Iisalmi, Finland. The complex is designed to turn 210,000 tonnes of forestry residues and 17,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen into around 180,000 tonnes of bio-e-methanol a year for shipping, with eSAF planned in a second phase.

## [From PET waste to CO₂ sorbent: how BAETA turns two crises into one solution](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/20/from-pet-waste-to-co2-sorbent-how-baeta-turns-two-crises-into-one-solution/)

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have converted low-grade PET plastic waste into BAETA – a solid material that captures CO₂ from flue gas and directly from air. The work, published in Science Advances, is funded by the VILLUM Power-to-X Accelerator and could lower the cost of captured carbon for e-fuels and CO₂-based chemicals.

## [From DAWN to bankable: German funding backs Synhelion’s next synthetic fuel plant](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/19/synhelion-german-funding-commercial-synthetic-fuel-plant-juelich/)

Synhelion has been selected for the Produktives.NRW programme: EU-backed funding supports its commercial demonstration plant for renewable synthetic fuels in Jülich — the step that turns DAWN's proof of technology into bankable production.

## [Power-to-Food: protein from CO₂ and renewable hydrogen reaches commercial reality](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/18/power-to-food-protein-from-co2-and-renewable-hydrogen-reaches-commercial-reality/)

Power-to-Food converts green hydrogen and captured CO₂ into protein via gas fermentation. Two years after the technology was profiled for Swiss readers, the picture is informative: Solar Foods reached commercial production in Finland and is launching in the US in early 2026, Econutri pivoted to pet food, and Arkeon filed for insolvency. The category is real, the economics are not yet settled.

## [Power-to-X Briefing: hydrogen setbacks in Switzerland, a hydrogen passenger ship — and fresh momentum abroad](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/17/power-to-x-briefing-hydrogen-setbacks-in-switzerland-a-hydrogen-passenger-ship-and-fresh-momentum-abroad/)

Swiss hydrogen setbacks meet a first hydrogen passenger ship on Lake Lucerne — plus green hydrogen, ammonia and eSAF news from Australia, Morocco, France and the UK.

## [Sunlight turns waste into hydrogen — Cambridge’s reactor moves toward scale](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/08/17/cambridge-scalable-solar-reactor-waste-hydrogen/)

_2026-08-17 · petermetzinger · Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network_

Cambridge's solar reactor makes hydrogen from plastic and biomass waste — now built simply and tested at square-metre scale outdoors. Promising science, still far from cheap hydrogen.

## [Summer break: our last post until 17 August](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/07/17/summer-break-until-17-august/)

The SPIN editorial team is taking a summer break: this is our last post until 17 August. Meanwhile, save the date for the Power-to-X Congress Switzerland 2026 on 22 September in Bern.

## [Power-to-X global news: data centres eye Chile’s hydrogen land, methanol travels 200 km by pipeline, and Kuqa finally runs flat out](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/07/17/power-to-x-global-news-chile-land-methanol-pipeline-kuqa/)

Chile may reallocate land reserved for green hydrogen to data centres, China moves methanol 200 km through a pipeline, Japan puts hydrogen hybrid trains into passenger service — and Sinopec's Kuqa project reaches full electrolyser load at last. This week's global Power-to-X news.

## [From recycled CO₂ to ethylene: Empa advances circular carbon electrolysis in the EU project REACT](https://power-to-x.swiss/2026/07/17/empa-recycled-co2-ethylene-react/)

_2026-07-17 · petermetzinger · Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network_

Empa is developing an electrolysis process that turns recycled CO₂ into ethylene — a defossilised base chemical — in the EU-funded project REACT.
