I think it’s a cherry blossom, but I know it’s cheery, whatever the flower. This photo is from April 2026 – a time of year in Berlin when it is an absolute delight to see flowers appearing, showing you that winter is finally at an end.

There’s something almost otherworldly in just how lush the greens are here, a lush green clearing amongst the trees in Britzer Garden in Berlin. Life is resplendent, and we are lucky to be able to witness it!

Perhaps I shouldn’t be sharing this private moment between consenting frogs, but when I’d spotted them from a distance I had actually thought it was just one frog and I wouldn’t be intruding by zooming in. How wrong I was! Still, I was happy to see frogs in Tierpark, it’s a little worrying when frogs \[…\]

A fascinating macro view of the subtle structure of a beached river iceberg on the banks of the Wisła in Poland it appears to have frozen into column-like shards that are compactly pressed together. I m sure there s a very good explanation for why it appears this way.

## [Intersection](https://leonard.earth/2026/08/15/intersection/)

The minimal architecture of the James Simon Gallery cuts into a wispy cloud passing high above. Strong shadows accentuate the contrast between the structure and the ethereal.

## [Purple Camassia](https://leonard.earth/2026/08/14/purple-camassia/)

_2026-08-14 · Alex Leonard · On a Variety of Topics_

A very beautiful and delicate flower, the Camassia is native to North America, but seen here in the beautiful Britzer Gardens in Berlin. Interestingly the flower s bulb can be harvested for food and was an important food source for both indigenous peoples and settlers.

I was quite surprised to come across these creatures whilst visiting Prague in early 2026. When I saw them swimming towards us through the river I assumed it was going to be a beaver, but then when they emerged on land it was immediately clear it was something else entirely a semiaquatic rodent from \[ \]

A very young trombone player makes sure to look his coolest with dark shades as he performs a free concert with a youth group at the Mirador del Baluard viewing point in Mallorca.

## [Fiat 500](https://leonard.earth/2026/08/10/fiat-500/)

_2026-08-10 · Alex Leonard · On a Variety of Topics_

In front of the Eglésia de Santa Eulàlia in Mallorca I spotted an extremely diminutive and well-preserved Fiat 500 vintage car I m pretty sure it was something to do with the wedding that had just finished in the church, and would certainly be a memorable car to drive off in. When I see these \[ \]

I can imagine architecture being a very satisfying craft taking the time to go beyond a simple plain wall and ceiling, and adding in extra detailing which might not be noticed consciously by every passer-by, hopefully gives pause to a few who enjoy the variety and contrast from the mundane. If I remember correctly, \[ \]

_2026-08-07 · Alex Leonard · On a Variety of Topics_

Maybe it s ludicrously common, but there s still something absolutely satisfying in a close look at a dandelion gone to seed a globe of delicate seeds ready to lift off on a random gust of wind and go where chance will take them. And of course who can resist their inner child and not blow \[ \]

## [Heterochromatin in the Common Bean.](https://the-biologist-is-in.blogspot.com/2026/02/heterochromatin-in-common-bean.html)

_2026-02-07 · Darren Abbey, PhD · The Biologist Is In_

I've recently been working on further developing a bioinformatics pipeline called YMAP \[1\] that I wrote during grad school. YMAP was originally designed for genomes on the scale of the 16 Mbase genome of Candida albicans , and primarily handled short-read Illumina sequence type data (as well as a custom microarry I designed that basically nobody ever used). Eventually, I'll release an updated…
