## [diary - day 308](https://yak.bearblog.dev/diary-day-308/)

WFH, got the Pup! But, solo. Much harder. She's been a good egg though. I just realised that I'm probably the most unsure about my career as I ever have been. I don't know what's on my horizon, I don't know where I want to go either. I've tried having conversations with my boss, but there's no clarity at all. The company doesn't know what it wants from people looking to make it to staff engineer…

Finally, the weather is letting off a little. I can think again. WFH day - Doing an odd week setup. Wed and Thurs in the office, now that I'm down to two days a week. Leaving drinks/dinner for our colleague on Wed night. It's been quite nice this morning! Had a little lie-in thanks to my wife, then took Bonnie for a walk. We had a long-lead delivered so she can practice off-lead walking with us…

WFH today, on puppy watch, and taking a 4-day week, so off tomorrow. It's stonking hot at 37 degrees. Insane. What are we doing? Got to do some exam prep, which I keep putting off. I hate exams so much; I'm not good at them. Hate that I'm forced to do it! Doing some design, refactoring, and general planning otherwise today. Straightforward enough.

Started the day again with a 7am walk. It's so lovely at that time. The temperature isn't stupid, and it's quiet. Bonnie's been doing great sleep-wise the last two nights, too, so I feel like I'm becoming human again. Today at work, it's all design and documenting (+ some small bug fixes as quick follow-ups to GA yesterday). Had another chat with the other engineer I'm working with on this one,…

Forgot to write this yesterday, oops. 300 days in my role now, wow. Busy day! Was in the office, and it was a double-whammy. Got to enjoy the morning first, though, with my Wife and Pup. We've been doing walks at 7am, and they're just a great way to start the day - especially as I've not been going to the gym. I was cracking out some last-minute changes to turn on our feature globally for our…

Another day working from home! A lot of them at the moment. With the heat and the pup, it makes me feel less guilty if I'm around. Today is all about catching up or getting ahead. I started drafting my plans for the quarter yesterday, but tbh most of it will come out of the wash on Monday when brainstorming with others. I think it's mostly going to be a quarter of TLC on the parts of the product I…

A big ol' day of planning, I think. Solo. Got the rough brief for this next quarter, and it's a lot of tech uplift instead of product delivery. Nice change! I've been wanting to do some architecture uplift and heavy refactoring, so this is perfect timing and fits into exactly where I wanted to target. It's nice to get into the details.

Not sure where today has gone so far. Working from home. Been told we need to become Anthropic-certified partners, and work is covering the cost + offering an incentive, so I'm gonna work towards that. One of my colleagues is leaving, which is a shame. He's probably my favourite and is way stronger of an engineer than I think the team realises. Tired. Today carries on.

Monday! No gym, too hot, and still figuring out my schedule. Did take Bonnie out for a ~7am walk, though, which was nice. Her second outing ever. She still (obviously) is very bouncy and unfocused when walking, but we'll practice! Then, into the office. Rounding out things. Got a week of 'quiet' where I can get things out the door, or polished off. Always love this part of the quarter. Ran out of…

Was nice to get to the office today and catch up with the team - a pretty casual day. Some had just come back from a trip to the US. I'm all out of 'agent' tokens this month, so doing some cranking by hand. I've missed it, and need to make sure I'm finding the time for craft. I liked this read: Agent Automomy . Onto the weekend!

One thing I've realised I'm having an issue with, when using agents to build, is that I work across multiple repos in different combinations - and that means I don't have a context for that combination. The agent burns tokens to gather context for the combination, mapping out what's related and how things tie together. What's the solution? I could just create a folder for each combo that contains…

Working from home! No gym today. Wife took our Pup to meet another Pup, her friend, and her children - Great for the pup, and great for focused time for me. Rounding out a bunch of things today, ready to go early access hopefully tomorrow. Exciting! Now trying to get a hold of another project, see if I can get on top of it and ensure it gets delivered ASAP.
