I've been writing again

I took a pause from writing earlier this year. A lot has been happening and it’s been a little tough to fully synchronize my thoughts in writing, while making new work (which I’m very excited to share - you might have caught glimpses of what is happening if you follow me on Instagram).

When the time came for the second year of Altadena Heals (a beautifully curated event inside a private garden estate, which showcases local artists of all mediums and performances by Braden Pontoli), I returned to poetry. I debuted my first poem, in front of a dozen neighbors, many of whom are still reeling and healing in the aftermath of the Eaton Fire.

This poem is meant to be a companion piece to “Tomorrow will rise again” - a photograph I made into the now sold-out print to benefit impacted neighbors and artists in Altadena. Somehow it feels even more visceral, despite the passing of time. In writing it, I return to that feeling of hopelessness and uncertainty but also acceptance and reconciliation. The making of this poem has given me permission to grieve by looking forward and rebuilding together with our community.

the morning I looked into the blinding sun

where nothing moved but the fire

as it blazed

with a fury—

unkind to all those it met

I held my breath in

gently gulping it like a pill,

wishing

for relief that never came

in those hurried moments

we drove

down our hazy street

I looked up into

today’s tomorrow

hoping we can rise together

again
