At the end of the Harvard bar scene in Good Will Hunting, Minnie Driver’s character, Skylar, asks Will out for coffee. He responds with this line:
“Great, or maybe we could get together and just eat a bunch of caramels... When you think about it, it’s just as arbitrary as drinking coffee.”
I love the movie, but this moment has always bugged me. Most people grab a coffee every day, it’s not arbitrary to suggest doing it together.
Furthermore, drinking a cup of coffee is scientifically proven to take the same length of time as the average human chat.
Will Hunting is supposed to be a genius but he’s made himself look foolish here. He also fails to challenge Skylar when she claims to be able to dunk a basketball—what nonsense.
Perhaps she brings out the fool in him. That’s love, eh?
