Lead From Strength, Not Exhaustion

TOGETHER! · TOGETHER! Building A Movement

When I joined TOGETHER! as the new Chief Executive Officer last month, I said this country’s next chapter belongs to “every young person already holding the pen.” This is my first note to you as CEO, and I want to start not by telling you what I’ll do, but by telling you the truth about what it takes to lead: it starts with taking care of yourself.

A few days ago, I sat down with FOX 5 DC to talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime in our community: mental health. It would have been easy to keep that conversation confined to a studio segment and move on. But I’ve been carrying it with me for years, in the friends I’ve watched struggle in silence, and in my own private battles most people never see. I’ve always been known as the steady one, the optimist people lean on. What people don’t often see is that optimism isn’t the absence of struggle; it’s a decision I make, repeatedly, to keep moving toward the light even when I can’t feel it yet.

So many of us in this community are fighting silent battles while performing wellness for everyone around us, showing up polished, composed, dependable, while carrying weight nobody asked us to hold. That’s why Minority Mental Health Awareness Month matters to me, not as a hashtag, but as a call to action: to close the gap between the care our community needs and the care it actually receives, to invest in a mental health workforce that reflects the people it serves, and to create space for the people around us to say “I’m not okay” without fear of judgment.

That belief is also why I take this new role seriously. We’re heading into a consequential midterm election cycle, and a healthy, hopeful young generation is the foundation of a healthy democracy. You can’t ask young people to organize, to vote, to lead, without also making sure they have the emotional infrastructure to sustain that work. This fall, we’re launching a mobilization effort across DC campuses ahead of the midterms, and it’s rooted in that same conviction: our young people deserve to lead from a place of strength, not exhaustion.

If you’re in a season that feels heavier than you can carry, hear this clearly: you are not alone, and you are not out of options. No wall is too tall. No door stays locked forever. The valley you’re in right now is not your final destination. I know because I’ve stood in that valley myself, and I’ve watched the air get easier to breathe again.

To the young leaders watching what’s happening in this country and wondering if their voice matters, it does, and it matters more than ever. But your wellbeing has to come first. Take care of your mind the same way you’d take care of any because you believe in it. Ask for help. Rest without guilt. Find your people. I’ll be beside you in this work, in this fight for a better tomorrow, and in the quiet moments when all you need is to know that someone sees you.

Political burnout is real, and if you’ve felt it, you are not weak; you are human. But our time to rise is here. We’re standing on the shoulders of those who came before us, and now it’s our turn to carry that work forward, together.
