This season is our favorite! Can you tell? But most importantly, we’re grateful for a time to reflect on the true gift of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

Each year, we draw the Christmas story! We read several versions of the nativity story in different children’s Bibles, adult Bibles, and books as we focus on different aspects. One day we might focus on the setting or how each character must have felt, another day on the star or the animals. Each day we draw our focus. Over time, the full picture of the first Christmas comes alive! (We just use construction paper and whatever great ideas the kids may have. Then, we tape our drawing it to a window so we can enjoy our creation.)

Here’s a simple 10-day countdown you can try with your family:

  • 10 days till Christmas: Focus on the setting of the first Christmas — the stable and the town of Bethlehem. On this day, we read about Jesus’ birth from a children’s Bible.

    Draw the Stable.

  • 8 days till Christmas: Focus on the importance of the star. On this day, we read about Jesus’ birth from a children’s Bible. We love The Jesus Storybook Bible.

    Draw the star!

  • 7 days till Christmas: Focus on Mary and the emotions she might have felt. We read about Jesus’ birth as recorded in the Gospel of Luke.

    Draw Mary.

  • 6 days till Christmas: Focus on Joseph and how he might have felt. We read about Jesus’ birth as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew.

    Draw Joseph.

  • 4 days till Christmas: Focus on the wise men and their gifts. On this day, we read about the story of the three wise men in The Jesus Storybook Bible.

    Draw the Wise Men.

  • 3 days till Christmas: Focus on Jesus! What was Jesus’ birthday like for him? Read a book about Jesus’ birth. We read a simple one, Christmas in the Manger .

    Draw Jesus!

  • 2 days till Christmas: Focus on the joy and celebration of Jesus’ birth. We choose a fun Christmas book on this day!

    Have a birthday treat!

  • 1 day till Christmas: Reflect on gratitude - Jesus as the Light breaking into darkness! We read about Jesus’ birth as recorded in the Gospel of John.

God gave us the most precious gift of all, so now we have the opportunity to spread his love!

We plan to make little care packages for the homeless on this day.
