There are weeks when the headlines don’t just rattle, they tear the fabric of ordinary life wide open. This was one of those weeks.

Charlie Kirk is dead. Iryna Zarutska is dead. Two killings, two headlines, two wildly different treatments in the press. And the contrast tells you everything you need to know about the culture we live in now.

When Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed in Charlotte, the coverage came with asterisks and caveats, quickly smothered in euphemisms and cultural excuses. When Kirk was gunned down, it was something darker: the casual smirks, the justifications, the not-so-subtle satisfaction among certain ideological camps who see violence as politics by another means.

That is the reality: political violence is no longer unimaginable in America. It’s tolerated, rationalized, even winked at — so long as it serves the “right” cause.

In moments like this, the political class reaches for its safest crutch: telling us all to “turn down the rhetoric.” But these are empty words from people who know better. They know the incentives they’ve built. The social media algorithms, the grievance machinery, the endless parade of tribal outrage. This makes it impossible to dial anything down.

The problem isn’t just rhetoric. It’s that rhetoric has become reality. Entire communities live inside grievance identities, weaponized by political actors who govern via division. Platitudes about civility are meaningless in a society where mobs salivate at the deaths of their enemies.

This week also carried another marker: September 11th. Twenty-four years since the towers fell. Twenty-four years since firemen, police officers, and ordinary citizens showed us what courage looked like. And twenty-four years since Americans, however briefly, flew the same flag without apology.

I remember it well: flags in every neighborhood, strangers hugging in grocery store lines, the sudden realization that we were not red states and blue states — we were simply Americans. That unity didn’t last, but for a moment it was real.

Today, the memory itself has been colonized. September 11th is no longer a national touchstone. It’s a talking point, filtered through tribal lenses, parsed into grievances. We no longer share the memory because we no longer share a people. The lesson of 9/11 is not just about terrorism — it’s about how fragile unity really is, and how quickly it dissolves when culture itself fractures.

This is where the Humpty Dumpty metaphor matters. We’re not on the verge of breaking — we already have. America has fallen off the wall.

The “egg” of national unity shattered in the past two decades. Race, culture, ideology, grievance — each has become its own shard. And no matter how loudly the elites promise to “put it all back together again,” they can’t. Not with slogans. Not with algorithms. Not with coercion.

The question now isn’t how to reassemble Humpty Dumpty. The question is how to live inside the fracture — and whether patriotism, flawed and imperfect though it may be, is the only glue left.

Charlie Kirk’s killing and Zarutska’s murder are not isolated tragedies. They are signals. Warning flares of a society where violence is being normalized and memory erased. They should force us to confront the brutal truth: a people that no longer shares allegiance cannot endure as one.

Orwell knew it. Bezmenov warned about it. Our ancestors lived it. They weren’t children of apology. They endured, they built, they fought — and their blood still runs in us.

We owe them better than hollow slogans. We owe them the courage to stand tall, to call things by their real names, and to defend what remains of our country from the vultures circling overhead.
