Will Congress Certify a Stolen Election?

Legislators will convene tomorrow to officially confirm the 2024 Electoral College vote, affirming former President Donald Trump’s supposed re-election in last year’s presidential contest. This comes despite a backdrop of mounting controversy over unprecedented foreign interference in the election and reports of anomalous results in several key swing states.

The timing is particularly significant as it coincides with the fourth anniversary of the deadly Capitol Insurrection, a moment of national reflection on the fragility of democratic institutions. Unlike the chaotic scene in 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to halt the certification of the election results, lawmakers are bracing for a far calmer event this time around.

No angry crowds are expected to breach security. No rioters will be seen pushing past barricades or engaging in violent clashes with law enforcement. And—while prominent legal experts assert that Trump is constitutionally ineligible to be president due to the 14th Amendment, which bars any insurrectionist from taking office—it’s believed that no one will attempt to disrupt the constitutional process from within the halls of Congress. It’s likely the certification will proceed without incident.

“I think it will almost be a nonevent,” predicted Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who expects the session to unfold smoothly. But should Blumenthal be right, it means the American democratic experiment has failed and an oligarchy has seized power with illicit help from America’s enemies.

The U.S. government was stricken by unprecedented foreign interference in the 2024 election, with both Iran and Russia identified as major players in attempts to disrupt the election through cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. Just days ago, the U.S. Treasury leveled new sanctions against organizations in both nations for their election meddling.

Adding to the controversy are allegations of widespread irregularities in several swing states. Nonpartisan voter advocacy group SMART Elections claims “irregularities in the 2024 election warrant investigation,” citing anomalies in tabulated vote data that could be the result of a cyberattack.

SMART Elections is also preparing to release data showing that the series of Russia-linked bomb threats that affected polling places was far more systemic than previously reported. These threats overwhelmingly targeted Democratic precincts and counties, throwing polling into disarray on Election Day and suppressing turnout for supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Other malign actors were in place to sway the vote in favor of Trump. Christian extremist group Lion of Judah held a campaign to enroll MAGA-supporter election skeptics as poll workers for the 2024 election. The leader of the program called it a "Trojan horse” gambit to place radical Christian Trump supporters in “key positions of influence in government like Election Workers.”

That may explain why word has come out about hundreds of ballots going uncounted in Wisconsin. Tens of thousands of voters had their votes rejected due to mismatching signatures, far more than in previous elections. Tens of thousands more were targeted by coordinated operations to challenge the identities of voters in swing states and Democratic strongholds. Others’ votes simply disappeared, or sent in mail votes that remain undelivered.

Donald Trump didn’t just steal the election, he stole America’s future. And it will stay that way unless we do something about it.

Faced with the full scope of these alarming concerns, it is deeply troubling that the media, Democratic leaders, and the Biden administration have remained silent, preparing to allow lawmakers to legitimize the Electoral College vote tomorrow. Unless something drastic changes in the next 24 hours, this will be nothing less than an abdication of responsibility to protect America’s democracy from “hybrid war” attacks by Russia and its allies.

By allowing foreign interference in the electoral process without substantive consequence, our nation will have failed to safeguard the integrity of our elections. Proceeding with certification, despite the clear doubts over the election's legitimacy, reveals a troubling lack of political will to confront the threats to democracy head-on.

If America's leaders cannot or will not stand up to foreign influence and internal attacks on democracy, the very foundation of our political system faces existential risk. We must not capitulate to authoritarianism.

Moreover, this inaction empowers authoritarian movements both abroad and at home, sending a dangerous message to autocrats and foreign adversaries: undermining the American democratic process can be done with impunity. The failure to implement meaningful safeguards, such as comprehensive electoral reforms and stronger cybersecurity defenses, emboldens those who seek to disrupt not only U.S. elections but also the very fabric of democratic governance.

Tomorrow’s certification won’t just validate the election—it will signal that the American political system has critically failed to adapt to the challenges of global disinformation and cyber warfare. Rather than confronting these threats, Congress is choosing to look the other way, further enabling those who seek to weaken us.

Dark days ahead.

More soon.

If we don’t take action to defend democracy, we don’t deserve to keep it.
