Every Bitcoiner agrees on one thing: Bitcoin is the hurdle rate.
If an asset, a business, or a strategy can’t beat Bitcoin over time, it isn’t worth your capital. That’s the whole discipline. It’s why “number go up” isn’t really the point. The point is that almost nothing else can keep pace with a fixed supply, sound money asset compounding against an inflating fiat backdrop.
But here’s the part that gets lost in the sloganeering: it is possible to beat Bitcoin. And understanding exactly how, and which vehicles quietly do the opposite, is the secret sitting in plain sight for anyone willing to look at the numbers.
Yes, You Can Outperform Bitcoin
Take Nvidia. Over the five years to August 2026, NVDA has delivered a compound annual growth rate of roughly 62%, according to FinanceCharts’ trailing five year figures. Bitcoin, over the same window, has compounded at roughly 7% a year, from about $46,400 in August 2021 to around $65,000 today.
Now obviously this time window picking is unfair to Bitcoin but the point remains, Bitcoin’s return obviously can be beaten.
Nvidia’s performance is not a rounding error. Nvidia’s five year CAGR is close to nine times Bitcoin’s. The asymmetric AI capex cycle, a near monopoly on data centre GPUs, and margins most software companies would envy did what very few things do: outrun the hurdle rate.
The point isn’t “buy Nvidia.” The point is that beating Bitcoin is possible. It’s just rare, and it requires taking on a specific, identifiable kind of business risk. Most vehicles that claim to give you “Bitcoin exposure” don’t even try to clear the hurdle. Some of them are quietly doing the opposite.
The Fiat Hurdle Rate
The challenge all traditional companies have is to outperform inflation. Clearly the best performing companies significantly outperform. Taking a conservative 7% inflation rate equities need to grow at 7% per year just to stand still.
The Vehicle That Shrinks and the Vehicle That Grows
Take 1 BTC and put it in multi sig cold storage. In ten years, you still have exactly 1 BTC. In thirty years, you still have exactly 1 BTC. No counterparty, no fee, no drag. That’s the whole point of self custody.
