Is 'Power to the People' just 'Fear of the People'?

We have all heard the phrase ‘power to the people’. It means that the most organized group, whether it be a union, a political party, or a grassroots movement, will be the group that has the most power, and the level of that power is dependent on how long the group can remain intact and how it continues to grow.

LionAdvocacy on X had a thread that hit me.

Governments are afraid of united groups of people.

In a town hall meeting of 200, a poorly organized group of 10 people can dominate the meeting.

In a regular rural or small urban municipal Council meeting, 20 people showing and sitting quietly in the Chamber without saying a word, can directly influence a vote.

For the brief time that the Freedom Convoy existed, if it had organized as a political party, it would have been the biggest political party in Canada and would have raised more money than any other existing political party in that time frame.

Did the Freedom Convoy cause a national emergency? No, but it did cause a political one. The Liberal government saw the risk and resorted to propaganda and force to end it.

Are the current groups forming for Alberta Nationalism or Independence a political emergency for the UCP government in the same way the Freedom Convoy threatened the Liberals?

Time will tell…

The groups have proved that the existing political power of the UCP will not control them, and the UCP government has proved that it will not listen to the grassroots groups. Does anyone remember the Bill of Rights fiasco from the 2024 AGM? The members wanted more rights, and their own UCP Caucus said no.

Is a showdown coming?

FYI, the Alberta Prosperity Project has more members than any existing Alberta political party, including the UCP. It will be interesting to see their fundraising totals for Q2.
