Laziness is completely misunderstood.
And it’s set fire to more dreams than rejection or public embarrassment ever did. If you study the reasons for laziness and procrastination, it’s all cope.
And if you fall for these dangerous lies and give into pathetic excuses, you’ll regret it. Your biggest enemy isn’t other people. It’s your laziness. I’m going to say what I’m not supposed to say in this essay and it will piss some people off. Good.
Here’s how people are conned into becoming lazy:
Being neurodivergent isn’t the reason you fail to achieve your goals. ADHD didn’t steal your freaking dreams.
You weren’t born with a disadvantage.
It’s just a convenient lie to blame some outside cause which is the fastest way to fail in life. It’s a cheat code for mediocrity.
I’m neurodivergent. I f*cking love neurodivergent people. But being neurodivergent doesn’t stop you from achieving your goals.
In fact, some of the most successful people in history have ADHD or are neurodivergent. It’s actually a superpower. Michael Phelps, Bill Gates, Emma Watson, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Paris Hilton, and Lily Allen are all neurodivergent.
They’ve done just fine. In interviews many of these folks often credit being neurodivergent for their interesting work ethic and view of the world.
Being neurodivergent might mean you work differently.
But it doesn’t mean you can’t work at all.
Burnout is another myth.
It makes you lazy. You’re not burned out. No. You’re just living a life and doing work you don’t give a flying f*ck about. And you’re spending time around people who you despise, working on missions you know are evil deep down.
If you climb the corporate ladder for long enough, you’ll definitely feel terrible. Or if you work for a painful boss you’ll want to escape too. Or if you have no permission to be creative or make decisions it’ll suck the life out of you.
See these signs and do something about it instead of booking your 5th holiday to Greece this year to escape.
Burnout has nothing to do with working hard or hustle culture.
It has to do with the world telling you to change and you not changing. Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result is insanity. It’s low IQ.
And it’s your fault, not some mythical burnout virus that kissed you on the mouth and made you sick.
Before the 2020 bat virus there was this relic known as “out of office” replies.
When I used to work in a bank I’d go on holidays twice a year and turn mine on. Everyone who got my out of office reply secretly cursed my name and hated me for not being available for a large amount of time.
This was acceptable. You could get away with it.
Then the 2020 bat virus hit and sent the world into lockdown. It produced a technological revolution that led to a productivity boom. With it came the expectation you would check emails and your phone and reply to anything urgent.
Some people didn’t get the memo.
They’re living in a pre-AI world where the world closes down while they’re away tanning their titties on the beach in Bali. They use the excuse “I was away on holidays for 6 weeks so I didn’t check my phone.”
You privileged a**hole. How dare you.
You’re entitled to have a holiday. But you can reply to a few texts every few days and it won’t kill you.
Those who live this fantasy fail badly in life, because while they’re away, the people with the opportunities are flirting with your competitors and cheating on you.
This new trend makes me sick.
You think you need to slow down but that’s a lie too. The spiritual guru tells you the slow life is what you need, but that’s because it aligns with the work they do. It’s their brand. It’s being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.
It’s not fact-based.
If you approach your goals in life with a slow approach, well, you get slow freaking results and waste time for no reason. Or you don’t make the money you could be making because you’re moving slower for no good reason.
If you go slow results slow down to snail speed.
That’s not a cheat code or a life hack or something to print on a t-shirt. That’s f*cking stupidity. Never celebrate being a moron or mediocrity. Acting with a sense of urgency and moving faster with systems is obvious.
One day soon you will die. So if you don’t make it happen, it ain’t gonna happen and you’ll have regrets about what you could have done and your unused potential. That hurts more than a knife inserted up your butthole.
Your parents get sick or the dog died.
You act surprised. You act like you’re the first person in history to put elderly parents into a retirement home.
Listen carefully: you’re not special.
Everyone including me deals with everyday life problems like this. They have nothing to do with your goals or your daily habits.
You don’t stop wiping your ass because granny got a cancer diagnosis. No. You help granny and keep functioning like a mature adult, or your life falls to bits and you end up on the street homeless.
The correct mindset is to assume chaos and tragedy will strike your life because they are built into the human existence and keep going despite the noise around you.
They scream “I’m stressed” at the first sign of any challenge.
They don’t want any challenges at all. They want the world to bless them on the genitals because they got a degree and have ten years of experience.
But that’s not enough anymore.
Grown adults are expected to upskill, push themselves, solve hard problems AI can’t solve, and learn how to prioritize and juggle multiple projects.
The stress that comes from pursuing your goals is a good thing. You want some stress. It’s the sign of growth. Pressure is what makes diamonds and it’s also what turns highly ambitious people into high performers.
A lack of stress leads to comfort. Comfort leads to poverty. And poverty steals away your freedom so you have to ask for permission and build someone else’s dream.
Most people need more stress, not less. They’ve been away from stress for too long and it shows.
Lazy people love to use the word busy.
They tell people they’re extremely busy, but also have 10 hours a day in phone screen time. So it’s true that they don’t have time, but it’s a lie that they couldn’t find more free time if they were more focused and had basic 3 year old levels of discipline.
Busyness is just being lazy.
It’s proof you’re totally unaware where your time is going and you don’t even bother to find out. Everyone has an infinite number of priorities. That’s not a flex. But as an adult you’re expected to manage your time and decide what’s important and what isn’t.
Successful people say “this isn’t a priority for me,” not “I’m busy and just pooed my pants and do you have a dummy I could suck, please.” Grow up. Jesus Christ.
Hard work isn’t evil.
It’s a fundamental concept everyone you look up to understands and has done to get the results they have. You cannot do anything worthwhile in life without hard work. You can’t even have children if you don’t like hard work.
Hard work is a part of being a basic functioning human. Doesn’t mean you overwork. But it does mean that you work hard, put in a lot of effort, and don’t turn on Netflix every 5 minutes to take a break.
Hard work got demonized because a segment of society decided they didn’t want to work hard, so they turned it into an enemy and made it sound like a conspiracy designed to murder babies.
I’ll say it again: you must work hard in life no matter what you do.
The good news is if you work hard at something you enjoy doing, it doesn’t feel like work. And that’s the real hidden answer tucked away.
Hard work isn’t the issue. It’s the type of work you’re doing that’s the real problem. Once you address that problem the desire for easy work, no work, or less work goes away.
As you can see, laziness isn’t real. It’s a lie.
You either do the thing or you drown in excuses about why you can’t. There’s no middle ground. The conspiracy theorists say social media is mass programming society to be dumb. I used to think this was an exaggeration.
I’m starting to believe it.
If you follow the wrong people, they will convince you to become mediocre and fall for every one of your excuses. AI made it worse. Not only do people listen to life advice from idiots, but they no longer think for themselves & outsource every decision to AI.
AI is a people-pleaser and spins the lottery wheel of “sources” to give them an answer which sounds like an answer, but is actually just a guess. AI and social media are responsible for the mass laziness epidemic we’re facing.
It’s easy to succeed in a world full of lazy people.
You underestimate just how lazy the majority of people are. And once you can see this glitch in the matrix, it changes how you are for the rest of your life.
Your entire life changes when you realize 99% of society is stupid and you can just do things and no one will stop you because they’re too lazy or distracted to even try.
This is what this whole essay boils down to.
You either want the goal, dream, or desire… or you don’t. You’re either making it happen every day, or you’re not. If you know you’re being lazy it’s time to dig deeper. You’ve probably chosen the wrong path.
When you choose the right goal you don’t make excuses. You do it with every spare minute you can. It’s like an addiction. You can’t NOT do it. It doesn’t make you tired. You don’t need a holiday from it. You think about it 24/7. It becomes an obsession.
Fear may be holding you back too. Author Mark Manson says: “Laziness is fear disguised as a lack of motivation.”
Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, one of the funniest books of the last century
He openly admitted he could barely make himself write a word.
His editors ended up locking him in a hotel room and sitting there, watching him, until pages came out. One collaborator said the work would simply never have existed if he hadn’t flown to England and parked himself on Adams’s doorstep to force it.
Adams said he loved deadlines. He “loved the whooshing sound they made as they flew by.” Look at what that tells you.
Every single time the stakes got real enough — a locked door, a person refusing to leave, a deadline finally close enough to hurt — the words came out. On demand.
The exact thing he’d sworn for weeks he couldn’t do, he did, the moment not doing it stopped being an option.
That’s the breakthrough.
It was never that he couldn’t. It’s that the cost of avoiding it hadn’t gotten high enough yet. The block was never real. He just wasn't willing to do the work until someone made not doing it impossible. And that’s true of almost everyone who calls themselves lazy.
You don’t have an ability problem.
You have a “the pain of not doing it isn’t bad enough yet” problem. The capability was always there. You were just waiting for a reason big enough to make you use it, which is another way of saying you didn’t want it badly enough to move before you were cornered.
What looks like stress or overwhelm may just be the fact you’re fearful.
And every time you’ve gotten fearful in the past, you’ve let it win so now you’ve trained the habit.
So every time a big decision is needed, you say maybe and don’t decide. Or every time you have a great opportunity to pursue, you sabotage yourself and blame ADHD or a busy calendar.
The only way to conquer fear that causes laziness is to create a list of fears and start facing them. That retrains your brain to feel fear and still act.
Eventually your brain learns that fear isn’t a reason to stop, it’s a reason to say yes. It’s free energy. It’s a rational response to a new challenge. Neuroplasticity then takes over and your brain starts working in your favor instead of against you.
The world has never been more competitive. Making progress has never been easier thanks to technology and free access to unlimited information.
Being lazy is something you must no longer tolerate.
You can do anything you want in life if you choose the right type of work, turn actions into daily habits, chase obsession, ignore idiots promoting self-care you haven’t earned, and have a sense of urgency to make progress towards what matters to you.
Every goal you want to pursue is just basic self-improvement in disguise.
If you ignore the basics of how to take action, dedicate yourself, work hard, have the right mindset, and make decisions… you’ll drown in a child’s blow-up swimming pool because of your own doing.
Laziness isn’t real. What’s real is acting like a mature adult and doing the basics.
PS - if you’re not lazy, but feeling some “resistance” getting after it…
You may be doing the wrong thing.
(Even if everyone tells you you’re doing it right).
Happened to me.
I trusted my gut, switched up a major component of my business, and revenue soared.
